357 Bain Davis?
Watching the 357 Max rifle building thread with interest as I had a G2 Contender rifle w/MGM bull stainless 18" barrel - very accurate! Sold all my T/C stuff.
My reoccurring 'want' rifle is a Ruger 77/357 B&D,..... Just missed a $500 stainless synthetic used : ( Anyone scratched this 357 B & D rifle itch? I've got the reamer and machinery so it' down to finding a doner rifle and premium barrel blank..... And some cash! Barrel will be a step heavier than factory, 'heavy sporter' or 'light varmint' best description, and no open sights are planned. Possibility of threading and suppressor as second phase for the ultimate 'suburban coyote' rifle. Recently Georgia law/regs allowed silencers here for hunting. Also, I'm not even interested in messing with a Ruger factory barrel hence the aftermarket 'heavier' barrel I'll buy. I'm just thinking that as an exterminator I want the best tool for taking out coyotes 'between this house and that house'.., lol! The 'other' thought was to just get a 77/357 and rebarrel to same (357 Mag), but loading a 357 B&D seems like more fun...? Disclaimer: I dream up a lot of projects. Some keep reoccurring. A FEW of those actually get to reality now and then! Last edited by Alan in GA; 01-18-2015 at 01:14 PM. |

If you're gonna be shooting subsonic, is there any advantage using the Bains case as opposed to the regular 357? Apart from the extra fun making cases, that is.
Ken.

Hi Alan,
I intend to do that very thing this summer. I had a Contender carbine in 357 Max, but for deer season this year Randi wanted a repeater (happy wife, happy life) so I bought her a 77/44 which she used to pop a nice buck opening day. I intend to re barrel it in 357 B&D when her attention is on something else this summer...... Tom |

I finished up Ruger 77/44 a couple of weeks ago for a customer, and rebarreled it with a heavy barrel 1.00" straight tube and chambered it in 357 Bain and Davis. Chambering and feeding was flawless...
I've got another one of these conversions in the works, and once I get it rebarreled, I'll post a couple of pictures of it over here for you guys. It will have a 1.00" bull barrel on it too, as well as a muzzle brake.... DAVID |

all right!
I've always wondered about a 77/44 with a QUALITY 44 mag barrel, and also a .357 B&D.
I think a 1" bull barrel should be manageable. Anxious to see the pictures. I was acquiring gun $$s for a couple of other guns and missed a 77/44 Stainles Synthetic for $500 : ( Will buy the next 'deal' on either 77/357 OR a 77/44 for whatever project whim I have at the time. Thanks for the post! |

357 B & D or Maximum
I shoot both and they are amazingly ballistic equals but my max barrel is a 12" and my B & D is a 10", so I shoot the max more often. Both are adequate for most game around here.

Why not just go with the 357 max and have the best and easiest cartridge for loading ?
