Default 17 WSM vs CF 17s

Last week on my way to a ball game I was speaking to someone here about how the 17 WSM will compare to the 17 CCM in performance. At the ball game a guy came up to me and pulled a 17 WSM out of his pocket and told me that he just got the rifle and ammo. I told him once he gets a fired case I would like to have one and he digs in his pocket producing the one in the photo… (he had let one rip in his back yard before mounting a scope…

l-r 5mm Mag, 17 HMR, 17 WSM, 17 CCM 17x28

As some of you know the 17 CCM is my favorite 17 for shooting PDs out to 150 plus yards using a 17 gr bullet at arond 3450 fps. Nothing else will compare to this combination for me considering performance (good solid 1st shot kills) and the noise factor (keeping PDs out running around) for more shooting.

My cheap electronic scale was blinking meaning it needs a new battery but here is what I recorded (not sure how accurate it is but the best with what I had available early this morning) using water.

17 WSM - empty - 33.7 – full 45.8
17 CCM - empty - 36.6 – full 45.7

I have not heard of anyone shooting <20 gr bullets from a 17 WSM but am interested in hearing about how they perform.

If a fellow handloads, to me there is no argument, the 17 CCM all the way but for guys not as lucky as us the 17 Rimfire looks like it may be a real winner.

I will vote for my 77/22/17 PacNor. Love that rotary mag. Now that Boyds is making a real stock for the B Mag, I may play with one. I have a HM2, MHR, HH, and FB, so I really don't NEED another .17, but the WSM is kind of interesting.

GL, have killed with the 25gr. but not the 20s yet. But 3,000fps out of a rimfire is something you must hear! AWESOME!!

Fat Cat,
You got that right!!! The sound wave in ALL the 17s I have, is quite a jump (in sharpness) over larger small cals!!! I wonder if the 12 and 14s are as sonic as the 17s are? This is one of the reasons I like the 22 and 243 sized cals in the small case capacity cartridges. They are markedly quieter!

Matt, I really have no thoughts about the 17 vha because in the last couple years (or so) I haven’t been around here much and to be truthful know very little about it. My job and family both have gobbled up pretty much all my free time and im ok with that for now being as I am graduating my third kid from HS in 4 years… the day will come where I can get back to it though!

FC, thanks and it will be interesting then to hear reports of the sound comparison from the 25 to the faster 15.5 gr or 17 grain bullet. Maybe they have no plans for the lighter bullets

This looks like a kin to the CCM… maybe better as I never shot the 25 and not very many 20s from the CCM . the CCM has been one of my most used PD rifles only because of noise and performance. I also have the short version of the 17 CCM but it doesn’t get used because of its velocity duplicating the 17 HMR although its closer to the length of a 17 HM2. I normally take the rf and don’t have to worry about my brass going down a hole.

I like low muzzle blast and recoil rifles for prairie dog shooting. I have 17 HM2, 17 HMR, 17 Hornet, 17 Fireball, and 17 Rem rifles but there are times that I don't feel like reloading ammo. So it may be handy to have a 17 WSM RF that would have a bit more rang than the 17 HMR but some what less than the 17 Hornet. Should ever a accurate 17 WSM bolt action rifle be made of steel and wood I may get one.
