Default Some times ya get lucky

I was shopping Gun broker a few weeks ago for a 222. I have a real nice 50's vintage Sako sporter in 222 but it just doesn't have the accuracy I was looking for. It is finicky to say the least, After trying at least a dozen different types of bullets I only found two it would shoot with any degree of accuracy. (about an inch) I didn't want to start accurizing the Sako, figuring it would be best left in the factory configuraton.

Soooo, what I stumbled across in the ads was a 700 Remington in a laminated stock. The ad read Shilen SM barrel .810 at the muzzle 26" long, 14 twist, test fired only. The wheels started turning as to the price of a donor action, stock, equivalent barrel and lathe time. I figured worst case scenario was setting the barrel back and recrowning. I set a price in my head and took the leap, winning the bid. Received the rifle about 8 days later and played with it this weekend. Mounted a Weaver T36 on it for load development. It showed up with 5 spent lapua match brass with the 100 yard test target fired from a machine rest the smith made himself. (photo included with rifle) Which was a ragged hole. It turns out the fella I bought the rifle from builds BR rifles in PA. My first test group was with 40 grn. Nosler BT seated to the lands sitting in front of 8208 with a cci 400 primer. It took 3 shots to zero the rifle and it put the next 5 into a ragged little hole. Next I switched to 40 grn. Vmax and the results were the same but about an inch of difference in POI. Switched to AA 2200 with identical results. Load work up done. Set targets up on the 200 yard line and in both instances with each type of bullet all 5 touching. To say the least, I am pretty happy with my old Sako's replacement.

Thats awesome. Never owned a .222. I have fired a buddies a few times years ago. Thought about putting a barrel on my BR rifle for one.

Rifles built by a good BR smith with the best of components..............once you have first hand experience with one of those..........there is no going back.

Enjoy the trip.........it will be memorable I am sure. Does not hurt that it is chambered in one of the most accurate cases of all time either.........mild to shoot, just a great combo to enjoy.
