It's entirely possible to shoot 5,000fps. Several years ago a friend told me about doing it with Berger 35's in his 22-284 and 15's in a 17Rem.. He wanted to see where the limit was. I believe one or both of them were actually around 5100 and groups were very tight. This person is a hardcore coyote hunter, don't know if either of these loads were ever used in the field.

I have seen loads published for the .17Rem over 5,000fps using the 15gr. Berger. My .17AB did 4,500fps+ with them.
Over 5,000fps wiht a .224 is really pushing it. There must be a 'better' powder for those speeds, though, which would do the job more easily and at lower pressure.

Daryl, My second choice of powder would of been RL15, it's a touch slower burning than the N540. It may work "better" or maybe not. I will leave that one for the next velocity nut to try. Aaron |

That is amazing.
Make a video of a few prairie dogs soaking up that 30 grain pill at 5000 FPS. Bet it would be graphic. Thanks for sharing. |

That's exactly what I was thinking.....a big FAT prairie dog out there around 300 yards or so with almost no wind blowing........
