Anyone have experience making 358 winchester brass from military 308 brass? I usually like same head stamps but 358 is expensive. The military brass is also different enough of head stamp to make it easier. My question comes down to capacity. I know most military brass is thicker and less capacity. Are velocities reduced at max charge or can you reach max velocity sooner with the reduced case volume. Looking to use 200gr hornady ftx with TAC powder.
With a shorter barrel I want to keep my velocity up as much as I can and dont want to give any up by not using commercial brass.

What I did. One and done.

I did make some from milsurp brass, for my cast bullets. No big chore, would I do it again? Probably not.

Hey there,

Here some case capacities, grs of H2O in a fired case, filled to the top of the neck for a .308 Win and 300 Sav that I measured for QuikLoad. Ave of 10.

308 Win:
Military
LC 74- 55.0
LC 86- 55.1
Cavin 91- 55.4

Commercial
RP- 56.7
WW- 57.5
FC- 55.5

300 Savage:
Hornady- 53.6
RP- 53.3
WW- 53.3
LC14- 51.0*

* I purchased some primed 7.62 Nato cases, gave them a trim, pushed the shoulder back to provide a crush fit when fireforming. Nice heavy case to run thru a 99, which are notorious for short case life, maybe. Time will tell.

2-3 grains difference in case capacity is pattern between military and comm. It can make a difference, but how much? Go weigh an anvil from a spent primer, not a lot of mass there to evenly spread around.

I say give it a go. You will see some shortening of case length going from .308 to .358 and will need to square up the case mouths and uniform the lengths. Doubt trimming again will ever be necessary. I use 280 Rems for my 338-06 for a reason.

Have fun.

Michael.

My experience when necking out 300 RUM brass to .358

Split necks mostly before annealing.
Then testing my metal work education and background with
'the EXPERTS" on case annealing claiming to: "quench in water".

I ran 20 each: water quench, and air cooled.

Nine of the first 10 quenched split.

Not a single air cooled split out of 430.

Costly when I paid a buck each for 500 cases and lost 47 to splits.
Bill K can vouch for what they looked like as I sent them to him.

We finally fired a few more test loads in Oct. 250gr AA7828 90gr=2884fps
99gr turned 3260fps. Whole lot more than you'll be looking for I know. Just info and experience to share.

Like AzSam showed, I haven't noticed much difference in capacity either. One thing is your necks will be a little shorter using 308 brass.

Wow... Several 358 Winchester owners on Saubier. Who would have thought...

My Winchester 358 cases, fired with primer in place weigh 162.5 gr and are 2.009" long.
Those formed from Winchester 308 cases are 1.997" long and weigh 162.9 gr.
When formed from 308 ICC range brass they are 1.993" long and weigh 181.9 gr.

My old Winchester M88 thrives on Benchmark powder with 200 gran bullets.
