Default .22 Dog Medicine for AR

Curious what you gents are liking in the way of .22 caliber projectiles to be used on coyotes when loading for AR 15's. This is a bit out of my wheelhouse. I have done very little with .223's and even less with AR's. I have a 15 year old son that insists on giving this a try. TIA. Jon

When I take the AR in 5.56 out, I use 55 grain sp midsouth varmint nightmares, for my rabbit and coyote shooting. Puts them down, but if you want hides, then they probably damage them too much. I don't salvage. Bill K

Adding to my post, this note. Another good reason I like that bullet, is it has the connular (?) to put a slight crimp in so the bullets don't creep with recoil and they feed smoothly.

Bill, we are not hide hunters either. I guess our priorities would be: humane kills, accuracy and reliable cycling. I figure his outer range will be not much, if any, more than 250 yards.

The best bullet would be a 55 or 65 gr sierra game king. If you look over on PM site you will find a lot of guys like them. Myself and my buddy have started using the 65's for deer a couple years ago with very good results. I haven't killed a bunch of coyotes with them but the ones I did kill dropped right where they stood. The 55 gr sp should work well also but didn't group as well in my AR's.

65gr bullets need a faster twist.

I'm "anti AR's", but, it shouldn't matter
for .223 coyote bullets results as long as the twist
and bullets match up right. Verify your twist rate first thing.

I found using 55gr C/L's on called coyotes they'd exit and blow
big holes usually ruining the hides. Where 40gr V'max never
exited. Just a tiny hole going in, insides blown up. Nearly all
I shot with them were DRT.

During antelope season one year I was calling coyotes and had full camo.
So yes I was illegal shooting the goat. Had 55gr .223, put one thru the ribs
of a buck at 100yds. Hit a rib going in, glanced back thru the near lung,
liver and exited out the far short ribs. I tried to measure the bullet travel.
Near as I could figure it was right at 13". Buck didn't go over 30 feet, backed up,
sat down and fell over dead. That's the only thing I've shot bigger than a bunch
of coyotes with a .223. Buck may have gone about 100lbs.

Although not an AR owner the 40 Varmageddon and 4198 or 3031 is my generic 223 coon/fox/coyote load. Will not exit a coon or coyote but a chest shot on a fox disembowels most. Never had any take more than a step.

I stay away from tipped bullets for hunting with the ar. I like the Hornady 50 gr SX or the Speer 52 hp. Both of these will give you more seating adjustment, no tip using up mag clearance. I have shot coyote,Fox and coon with both these bullets out of my 1/9 bushmaster, I shoot for hides,of the two the SX is my favorite in the 223. Blackhills ammo is still available with the Speer bullet if you want to try them without or unable to reload. Although for the Speer bullet, I like them starting out more at 22-250 velocity. I have a couple of suppressors waiting on the gov and I'm torn between using my 204r or the bushy for night calling. I tend to call near cattails and the coyote must be drt at night, I think the SX is more reliable bullet especially inside 200 yards which is my max at night(lights not legal for rifles here,no night vision at all).

Thanks for all the help, guys. We will be reloading, at least for the coyote rounds. The stated barrel twist is 1:7" but can't verify as he has yet to bring the firearm home. This is a bit of a strange project for me as it is his first self-funded firearm. I am trying to mentor but avoid dictating.
