I have a Sako L461 17-222 that I bought for a sweat heart deal maybe 4 years ago for $800 (down from $1K). It should have been $1400.

If you like the rifle then buy it. The 17-222 is a graceful round.

Thumbs up The 17-222....a good solid round.

Maybe why I built a PD rifle around it.

I recently purchased a Sako L579 Deluxe in .243 for 950.00 at a local shop. It is in excellent condition with the original Pecar 4x scope. It was part of an estate of several well maintained guns. I felt that it was underpriced for the condition that it was in. I also purchased a Sako l61R Deluxe in 7 MM Remington Mag. with the period correct Redfield 3 x 9 scope. I purchased it off of GB. It did not get a bid at 1350.00 but I hesitated and the auction expired. It came up again with a premium exposure and sold for 1625.00. Just shows that exposure can greatly affect the price. Your rifle sounds reasonable when all on the extras are figured in.

Default Value

That rifle is worth the value of its parts, so way south of that asking price. Those here that know me know I buy and sell a lot of Sako's and once you modify one, regardless of the modification, the value is less than a clean original. Now prices are high but give me that guys asking price and you can land a sweet original. Buy a beater with a third that amount and build a 17-222, you'll have money left over.

My thoughts also. An altered L461 rifle is just a semi-custom or custom rifle built on a Sako action. For me, original L461 Sako rifles are worth far more than rifles built utilizing L461 actions and other parts.

I own three identical sporter weight L461 rifles chambered in 222 Rem, 223 Rem, and 222 Rem Mag. I also own a few other Sakos in original condition such as a sporter weight 22-250 (L-579), an S491 varmint weight 17 Rem, a sporter weight 6.5x55 Swede (AV), and a sporter weight 264 Win Mag (L61R), to name a few of my favorites. All of the rifles mentioned here feature original Sako scope bases and rings as well as period correct Weaver steel and Redfield scopes, all also in great condition that serve as fully functional scopes. None of these rifles will be altered in any way while I still walk the face of the earth. To do so would be kin to defacing a Rembrandt for me........

If I want to build a custom on a Sako action, which I have done several times, I'll seek out a beater or altered rifle with a fully usable action, and I won't pay a premium price for it. I currently have a NIB L461 action still in the white that I paid $500 for about 3-4 years ago. Some day it will become a custom rifle built on a Sako action. As soon as I decide on what to chamber it in........
