COW Fire Forming the 20 Vartarg - Anyone doing this?
COW Fire Forming the 20 Vartarg - Anyone doing this?
I'm new to the 20 VarTarg and was curious if anyone is using this method to fire form their cases. I have some Bullseye and Titegroup powders on hand. I've read a lot on using the COW method with some folks using cornmeal instead of cream of wheat, but I haven't seen anyone making the 20 VarTarg rounds. |

COW fire forming is not caliber or cartridge specific.
I myself don’t use the method any more. |

I run .221 Rem Fireball brass through a .20 Vartarg full length sizing die and haven't had a need to fireform my brass. Randy.

I understand that. My questions was about people using it for the 20 VarTarg.

I wasn't sure if there was any benefit to fire forming with the COW method first. |

My 20VT love affair has gone along quite well by forming, loading and shooting hair. No sense wasting perfectly good bullets, not to mention powder shooting paper for FF.
I load about one grain under my field load and go shoot rats. This has gone well now for exactly 1,200 20VT cases. Can't see changing a thing.

I am like Rick, a waste of bullets and time. Load 1/2 to 1 grain lower than your main load and use them in the field. You will be surprised how accurate they shoot and the ground squirrels can not tell the difference when hit. Bill K

I just reduce it slightly and often use the same load to fire form new brass, when I need it. As I said it is often just as accurate as the final load. My loads run in the area of 20 grain plus or minus with a 32 grain bullet. But that is my gun. you need to work up to a safe load in YOUR rifle. Normally I can take a new 221 fireball case, run it into my FL 20VT or Scc die and load and make the final fire form on that case with the first firing. Make sense ? Bill K |
