Default Now Kevin...

Those doglegs are usually attached to a great shooting gun of some type.
We all can’t have 40-X’s

Matt
Matt, now I just need to find a 'project' stock for my 'project' barrelled action. Something 'glass, beat up, nasty, cast off, orphaned...looking like something a dead beat brother in law drug behind his pickup.

If anyone has such a beater stock they'd like to sell, let me know. I recently completed a rehab job on this old sleeved 722 Remington BR gun in 222, converting it from a glue-in to pillar bedded in the process. Did it 'Rat Rod' style.....might be a good look for this project, too!

Good shootin' -Al

Matt...what are you running for bases/rings on your XP? Did you convert the rear to a two bolt base or leave it a single bolt?

Thanks! -Al

Default Well...

Al, I left that one alone. Its a Leupold single piece base with 3 screws total and
Leupold 1” rings.I use a rifle scope as it is very mild shooting the 30s from the ppc case.
Al I like the fact that you are resurrecting older rigs, bet they shoot great too.Nice work.
Thanks for sharing all the cool pics!
Matt

Default A little update

Needing a test stock to evaluate the barrel, these two were the choices...both had previously housed sleeved actions that were glue ins.

The maroon one got the nod and like a Thanksgiving turkey, the carving began. Pillar holes and recoil lug mortise milled and a general debulking of decades of nastiness:

Not sure how , but it all fits!

Some time in it's sordid past, the action had the front action screw hole relocated...not a bad idea as it goes through a thicker part of the receiver than the original. The bad news was that the new hole was off-axis in two directions. Made a 1/4-28 tight fitting plug, Loc-Tited it in place with green 680 and filled and profiled the area to match the receiver. The original XP front action holes have this wonky recess around it that will do nothing but interfere with the bedding job.....that was addressed later.

Drilled and tapped the rear action screw hole to 1/4-28, made a .625 pillar for the rear and a .750 for the front.

When it was on the mill, a second rear base screw hole was added. Since the XP's use the same bases as the Model 7's, I made the screw spacing .295 so the post '96 Model 7 bases...that use two screws...can be used. Opens up a lot of options for mounting.:

Some final work and then it's time for the bedding. Should be curing in the Pro Bed this afternoon. Sharp eyed types will see the front action screw area tweakage:
