Default My story about the last hour of the last day of season, -12, record bull!

Ok so that's B.S. .
Actually it was the last day of season, -12 with about 7 1/2hrs left of legal shooting light so a little brush head "frying pan bull" caught the bullet. It woulda been a cow instead but the cow harvesting part of season ran out before elk hunting weather really started.
Also true is while we were on a ridge waiting for the elk to come up from the bottom I was glassing the timber and at exactly 469 yards by the Leica's read was a pack of 6 wolves laying around in the snow doing what wolves do when they ain't killing elk. If I'd a had a wolf tag and my 6X47 Lapua or .20 Dasher or if my buddy "with" a wolf tag woulda had something with more legs than an AR in .223, that elk hunt would a turned into a wolf hunt on the spot!
At any rate the wolf harvesting options didn't pan out and it was way past popping a nice fat cow so this little fella came home for dinner, so to speak.

Bout 3 years old I'd guess and while I'd a much preferred a cow I didn't get no selection this year other than a couple bigger bulls and he ought to be real tasty anyway.
Tomorrow I go to to the wolf tag store and pick up a wolf tag but man was today an opportunity I'll bet I regret for a long time. If I'd a had a tag I coulda poked one with my .300 Win. albeit with a bit much fur damage. Shots that good on wolves don't happen very often, that's why I decided to save the $20.00 and pass on a wolf tag this year . After we gutted that bull I spent about an hour trying to figure out how to kick myself in the butt for being a tightwad dumbbell!!!
All said and done though it was an outstanding day I won't soon forget!

go job doug, he may not be a cow but he won't be as tough as an old bull.
shot an older whitetail buck this year, we made him into jerkey. otherwise the more we chewed the bigger he got.

Nice, just right for what you wanted him for. We were in the 40s every day of the season I had my bull tag for, then it dropped into the teens the day after season closed. But I have a cow tag for the entire month of December.
