Default Cooper finish

... especially if you fill the open pores when you refinish. Cooper wood finishing leaves quite a lot to be desired in my opinion.

This is the sealed can of the stuff I bought a good while back, as I recall it took some searching. It's solvent based not waterborne, perhaps it's no longer made? I bought a can just in case, never opened it yet. Can instructions say not to thin the product and it can be wiped on. Sorry I can't be of any more help...……..

Thanks Herb. I will try and check a few local stores and see if they have some old stock around. Otherwise I will refinish the stock.

Well you got me started. I just sanded down the stock on a M 21. This is the first Cooper I ever bought, back in 2000 or there abouts. It was AAA+ back then so don't know what it would be rated today. It had some minor dings but nothing real bad. I started with 400 grit, then 600 and ended up with 000 steel wool. I put on the first coat of Tru oil and I think that from what I see so far it will turn out great.

Let it dry really well before re-coating, don't try to rush things, especially if it is humid outside.

I did a custom stock (not a Cooper) with Tru-Oil and turned out great. Five coats total and finished up by lightly knocking the shine off with 0000 steel wool.

varmintshooter,

Please post pics when you are done. I would love to see how the Tru-Oil turns out.

I just hand-rubbed it in until it blended, no dilution or thinner.
I would put a little on my fingertip and then using my fingers and palm rub it in, then when it was dry I put on another small amount and repeated. It worked well enough that I cannot find any blend marks or differences in the factory finish and the touched up areas.
