X caliber barrels
I’ve always wanted to have the ability to rebarrel my own rifles. After years of thinking of doing it I finally bought a couple of .224 1-12 chrome moly straight blanks from X caliber on the last sale they had. First Guinea pig was my Sako l461 .222 Remington.
The lathe I have access to is a central machine benchtop.. left a lot to be desired. However lots of double, triple checking measurements and making small cuts helped keep things straight. First barrel contoured straight taper from 1.050 at the shank to .691 at the muzzle at 28”. This morning put it all back together and headed to the range with a box of factory Remington 50gr. Couple sighters to get zeroed, put 3 down in the magazine. Here’s the result at 100yrds. Finished rifle with the barrel that came off of it. First pass on the blank I know after you do a lot of barrels this is nothing exciting. However For the first go it was immensely satisfying to see the results of my efforts. Other blank will be going on a Ruger 77 Swift. Squirrels and chuck’s are going to have a rough spring! Last edited by 458win; 02-06-2022 at 12:33 PM. |

Good for you, well done!
I bought a Sheldon a couple of years ago. I am still trying to get my confidence back, been 30+ years since I had been beside one. I am fortunate that one of me best buds is a tool and die man. He has lots of patience with me. I have seen some simply amazing work done with what many would say is impossible. One story I saw some place, the fellow had a small lathe and it was on saw horses and tailgate of his truck when he did his work. He moved around a fair bit in a camper as I recall. |

Thanks for the kind words! I’ve seen really good results come off rather worn out equipment and some rather shoddy outcomes off brand new machinery.
I had to use a piece of masking tape to keep the cross feed dial from rolling backwards when the knob was at the 9-12 position found that out when half way through a cut and it stopped cutting. |

Looks like you did a great job. Proof you can do good work with what you have. All it takes is "some try and want to". To tighten up your crossfeed, you might try tighten up the gib screws,I think that's the slotted screws on the side of your crossfeed slide. Hal |

Always great to see someone step up and do something new, it's called learning and is what makes life worth living IMHO. Good on ya!
