I will take a stab and say you will never put too much 748 in a .223 case with a 40 grain bullet on top. I have far, far too many types of powder, but 8208 seems to be one of the best I have used with 50 grain and up. It's really harder to find a powder that does not work than one that does in a .223 if you do a ladder test. I will be playing with the A2200 data powder as I have an 8lb jug full and want to find a load with it. Many talk about hot weather and CFE223, but I "almost never" uses max loads that are on the upper end of the psi, almost.

Many do talk about that, but they forget also, that this can occur with any powder in the hot weather. I am with you also, never really go to the max, so it is not a issue with hot weather. I prefer accuracy over speed, any day. The old saying a slow accurate bullet trumps a fast inaccurate one.. Bill K |

Some of the old Speer manuals showed 28.0 of 748 as the max load for 55 grain bullets. Yowza!! 27.0 is where I stopped.
AA2200 might be the perfect powder for 40 gr. bullets as mentioned earlier. It's OK to slightly compress 748 and if it shoots well in your rifle be happy and might only be 100 fps slower than you will see with AA2200. |

I have used AA2200 with 40gr VMAX and NBT for a few years now, and it is one of my favorite PD loads. 24.5 gr of AA2200 gave me 3675fps and were fine at 100°F temperatures, noting that I do not leave any rounds in direct sun or in a warm chamber.

The pressures given are 51.300PSI for the CFE223 and 49,700CUP for the Varget. This makes me wonder why the low maximum for the 748, of 39,000CUP. Probably due to the 26.3gr. being a non-compressed load in the brass they used, ie:WW.

Compressed 748 load
Thanks for all of the feedback. Much appreciated.

redo your ladder when it's hot. use that for max. I don't like ball powders for that reason. I try to stick with "extreme" as much as possible, or if I have to use ball, usually end up a grain or two under max for safety in all situations.

Benchmark
Benchmark is pretty much all I use for several years now in 223. I have used my loads (28 grains with 40's and 26.5 with 50's) in several rifles. Always seems to do very well especially the 28 grain powder & 40 grain bullet load regardless of AR or bolt gun.
Also very temperature insensitive. I have used it in the single digits up to well over 100. |

Benchmark also works well in my .45/70's.
