Not a Sako. Looks like Mauser/Mini-Mauser and probably chambered for a 17-223 round, made by said company and imported under another name..

Interesting rifle.......
I have never seen one.......especially a 17 caliber from Europe, in the 1960's.
My guess would be a 17 Magnum (17-222 Remington Magnum), or 17-223, or 17-222. BUT.......I would first "slug" the bore, to be absolutely certain that the groove diameter is 0.172" and NOT 0.177". As others have said, I would also cast the chamber. Hope this helps. Kevin |

having the barrel done and also the chamber cast now... should know later this week its not 17-223 for sure, gunsmith is pretty sure that its 17-222 which means that 17 remington would be an easy rechamber

Remember.........
.......when comparing the 17 Rem to the 17-223......that the 17 Rem has the longer case,.....BUT the 17-223 has the longer headspace.
BTW.......rechamber from 17-222 to 17 Rem?........you're kidding, right??!! Kevin |

Why would I be kidding? I can’t handload and if I want to shoot this factory ammo is avail.

Rechambering will ruin the value of the rifle.
If you want to change calibers, get another barrel with the same contour in the caliber of your liking. Hal |

Find out what the heck it is and see if a member close by can load you up some safe test loads and see how it shoots first before doing anything to the chamber/ barrel.

Time to take up the dark hobby of reloading if you want to own that rifle.

Agree with Hal, don't re chamber it surely you could get someone to reload for you, find out what you have first

Like I have said in previous posts it is getting a chamber cast done, depending on the caliber will depend on what happens to it. I reload I have over 150 sets of dies and more presses than should be allowed as well as a camdex loader. I am building a new shop and my reloading stuff is torn down at the moment, like I stated in a post previously it will be about 7 months before its up and running again,it will be about 900sqft of reloading benches along with my mill and lathe.
I have been a competitive shooter for 30 yrs my family owned a gun store and I work in the firearms industry still. I was a ballistic tech for a major bullet manufacture before moving to nevada. I am not worried about the value, its only worth what someone will pay for it. Last edited by alan243; 01-01-2019 at 10:55 PM. |
