Default Done gopher shooting

Well, at least for this year. The local ones have pretty much gone down for the year, the last time I was out locally I spent 4 hours for 15 shots.

On Monday I went a little further afield to some higher elevation pastures but the grass was about knee high since the cattle had not been put on it yet, so there weren't many opportunities.
I did spend about 4 hours there and got 50 off a hillside that was mostly sagebrush.

But it is about 65 miles to the pasture and with the price of fuel it is hard to justify the trip for so few shots. So it looks like it is time to call it done for the year. The best part though is that this was a good year unlike the two previous when the numbers were down.

Ours gophers go down about August 15th. We had a long cool wet spring and now the grass has gone crazy. Second cutting for hay isn't too far away though.

Just about all our rock chucks and ground squirrels have gone down for this season. With daytime temps now in the triple digits, I'd not expect to see any of these critters until next spring.

We had late snow and blizzard conditions into mid-April, then a quick heat-up into an early summer. Not decent shooting conditions at all this year....hoping for better conditions next year.

Considering the price of components and fuel right now, I have mixed feelings about all this.....none of them are good.

Same here, there are sage rats in the vineyards yet. But only early in the mornings.

Even though it is a longer drive to the higher elevation pasture it is a good change. Locally we have the Richardsons ground squirrels, at the higher elevation pasture it is a mixture of Richardsons and Columbian ground squirrels with the majority being Columbians.
They are a bit larger and they often climb to the top of the sagebrush to look around, it is different shooting experience from ground shooting the Richardsons.

I hate to see it come to an end, it has been good shooting this year. I sure wish that the gophers were like PD's and could be found up about anytime of the year.
