Thinking of upgrading my rasps/wood files
I have a Grobet 8 Inch Pattern File that I am pretty happy with, but the rest are mutts that I don’t have much use for outside of rough carpentry and a couple no names that at one time were nice. The latter are probably older than me and over the time I’ve owned them have gotten to the point that they now tear more than cut.
In a phone conversation with a friend in another state a friend suggested that a Liogier 10" 9 grain Cabinet Rasp would be a good place to start. He does awful nice wood carving, but has never worked on gun stocks. Any thoughts? Last edited by JDHasty; 08-04-2022 at 02:18 AM. |

Woodcraft has a good selection. The Nicholson 49 and 50 aren't very good, not the gold standard they once were. Check out the Iwasahi that Woodcraft sells. Unless you have a lot of wood to remove, I'd look at the finer cuts. The fine cut will remove wood very fast even on hard Turkish walnut. The Liogier rasps are nice but I can't swing 100.00 plus for a rasp. The one I borrow briefly left a nice finish but so does the Iwasahi at a lot less money.

A friend sent his older files and rasps all down to Boggs for sharpening, instead of just sending the ones that were still in pretty good shape, he sent a dozen and among them were some that he was going to give away to knife makers. All came back in superb condition. Even a few that were rusted badly. He's like me and doesn't throw anything away. His cost was ~$60 and that included return shipping.
So where I am at today is I think I am going to hold off buying new and send mine to Boggs, but may order a Liogier 10" 11 grain Cabinet Rasp, instead of Liogier 10" 9 grain Cabinet Rasp depending on how mine come back. I used one yesterday evening and it is everything I would want in a rasp for final wood removal prior to sanding. Last edited by JDHasty; 08-04-2022 at 10:27 PM. |
