OT big bore project... 25 or 6.5
Many years ago Bill West gave me sone brass for a project back when I was doing my 257 Roberts project. IIRC, the brass is 444 brass formed to 257 Roberts. My plan was to get a 257 R in a#1 or any other single-shot like my TCR and just cut the breech end of the chamber for the rim groove.
Well now I’ve been thinking maybe 6.5? A 6.5 x 257 rimmed. Or is it not worth the effort and cost of custom dies?

Just for info and depending on what you want rifle you want to do one on/in. You might check out J.D. Jones 6.5 JDJ. Dies and all are all on the market and it might fill you need. Just a thought. Bill K

6.5 x 257
Hi there,
The 6.5x57mm and the 6.5x57R have been used in Germany and Europe for a number of years. Just the 7x57mm or 7x57R necked to 6.5mm has compared to .257 for the Roberts. Might a bit easier going that route when it come down to dies and load data. All the best, Michael. |

Thanks to both of you!
Bill, I left out that I recently purchased a 15” Bullberry barrel (an older LV Nevada barrel) in a 6.5 Bullberry. Being completely ignorant of both the 6.5 Bullberry, and the 6.5 JDJ I’m on a new learning curve. A quick search it appears the two mentioned are very similar. So thank you! I am in total awe over the 6.5 Bullberry and was thinking a bit more capacity would be great and well since I had the rimmed brass all I need is a donor that could chamber the R. 257 brass. Micheal, I ran across a good article about the 6.5x57 and didn’t realize what a good round that was. Many years ago my good ole friend Rem built a 6.5 x 284 and I thought why... now, by accident I know why... he was so much advanced in great rounds.

big bore project
when I was in business I had several guys have me rebarrel small ring mausers to 6.5 x 57. it made up into a good rifle.
if your donor is a single shot there is an easy way to use both rimmed brass and rimless brass if the extractor/ejector can handle I tor just by changing it out. chamber the barrel with the rimless case to the proper headspace then cut the rim cut with a lathe to the proper headspace. have done it for the 223 but guys want to make cases from 357 max. |
