I looked into doing this a few years ago and if I recall I needed the appropriate magazine box, spring and follower for the 221 FB size case. Some say the extractor ring is in a slightly different position when they come as a 221 FB from Remington but since I generally upgrade all my Rem 700 builds to M16 type extractors, it was a none issue for me, but it's something you may want to look into.

Default converting to 221 FB

I've done it twice. One with a CZ 527 and one with a 700 Rem. both needed to have the 221 magazine to work. The CZ I used 221 fireball and works well, the 700 Remington I used a 17 fireball and made it work for a 20 Var Targ. The 221 case being shorter does create challenge feeding with a 223 magazine.

Default 221 fb

I did once.
Never got it to feed or eject properly.
I later bought a factory chambered in 17 fireball in a Rem 700, and had rebarreled to 221. Worked great.
Also a a Sako A1 action will work just fine. But they are hard to find and expensive.

I have an original LH 17FB that someone converted to a 17 Remington.
I can tell you that on the Remingtons the ejector is in a different location on the true FB actions VS the 223. the FB bolt worked fine on the 17 Rem, but I'm told the 223 would not work well on the FB as a repeater.
When I got it I eventually had it converted back to a 17FB with a custom barrel, but I had to work to find a solution for the magazine. PTG had some FB followers at one time and that's what i ended up buying. I will say it's not 100%. usually 1 in 4 will pop out of the mag and not feed properly.Supposedly the first ones they had made were "backwards" according to them and they had them remade. I wish I had thought of it at the time because I wonder if those "backwards" ones would have worked better in my LH version than their "good" ones do. Eventually I will get around to fixing the feed issue. I came across another LH FB a few years ago and it just sits in the safe for now. I might pull the box and spring from that one and see if it fixes the feed issue in my custom.

Would a Remington 700 223 work if you installed a Sako extractor?
