Been quite a few years ago but I had the HOTS (real bad) for a Remington XP 100. Hit one of the BIG gun shows in the Sacramento, Ca. area. Made the rounds, found the one I wanted, continued looking at the rest of the tables then went back and got the XP. Looked down the barrel and saw a few rust spots. No worries.
Just happened to have a new box of ammo with me. Stopped on the way home in a big open area just off the highway and popped a few rounds. NO MORE RUST SPOTS!
Banging steel out to 400+ yards with a 10" barreled bolt action pistol? PRICELESS.

My bud inherited an old Sav 340 in 222. Shot like a house afire. I looked thru the bore it was pitted beyond belief. Told him it needed cleaned and we used all kinds of stuff to get the copper/crud out of the barrel. Had it as good as we could get it and shot it again. Shot like crap. Told him to keep shooting and never clean it. After awhile it settled the crud back into the pits and shot great again. Whodathunkit?

Typical. You CAN clean them too much. The thing is knowing just when to quit. An oiled patch is all that's needed in most cases. Leave well enough alone.

Default pitting

I bought a re-barreled Kimber 223 AI off the forums a while back. It has the same thing as your 1st two pics. I don't remember the barrel maker the seller used when he had it re-barrelled, but it was one of the better major companies. Shoots very well, so I quit worrying about it.

Charlie:

Reminds me of an old 1917 Enfield barreled action I got on a trade.
All I wanted was the action really.
Man said the gun had been a parade rifle in Michigan and never cleaned.
Bore was so rusted up he was ashamed to let me have it too. He sawed
the muzzle off about 6-7" as that was the worst. Looking down the bore it
looks like a rusted out water pipe.

I had it around a few years. Mentioned it to the guy running the CMP match's.
He wanted to play with it and his hard cast bullets. Amazingly he worked it up
with about 15gr Red Dot and won most of the matches at 200yds.

When I got around to having the rifle rebuilt to the 358RUM I gave it away then
asked for it back to use as a pattern to turn the new barrels with so I didn't
have to replace the stocks too.

IF Larry Trotter will contact me again I'll send it back to him.

I have a new 6br barrel from one of the popular companies that looks just like this in several areas. Shoots really well and doesn't seem to copper up much. There are times that I really hate my borescope!!

Ignorance is bliss...

By the way that is an impressionist style Rastafarian ... the 2 dark spots are eyes and then a nose and lower part a mouth... The top area is crazy dreads.
