SR4759 or IMR4227 in 17FB or 20VT anyone
I have a good supply of both. I see data for the 221, very little for the 17 or 20.

My old Hornady manual shows max load of 14.6 gr. of 4227 with a 25 gr. bullet for the 17 MkIV, which should get you in the ballpark.
In a 17 Fireball, GRT calculates 14.6 gr. of H4227 generating 3615 fps @ 44kpsi with a 25 gr. bullet and 15.6 gr. of H4227 paired with the 20 gr. Vmax doing 4023 fps @47kpsi. In a 17 Fireball, GRT calculates 14.6 gr. of IMR 4227 generating 3707 fps @ 47kpsi with a 25 gr. bullet and 15.6 gr. of IMR 4227 paired with the 20 gr. Vmax doing 4125 fps @50kpsi. I always used 4759 for low pressure and low velocity loads in larger cartridges. Never tried it in a 17. With the very large kernel size it would be fun to get into the case and I am not sure you could get enough in to do much other than subsonic loads. Trail Boss works great in the 17 for Subsonic.

SR4759 is bulky but a fairly fast powder.
I have burned a few kegs with my cast bullet loads in a large assortment of calibers and cases. Not looking for subsonic for this one. I have not seen any Trail Boss for probably 10 years. VV advertised Tin Star, never saw a kernel of it. Not trying to press into service unsuitable combos. There is just a small amount of data for the 20VT, some what out dated, as are other cartridges. I found some early load data for 221 using 4227 and 2400. I am going to try both and may try some AA#9. |

Per burn rate chart, their burn rates are very similar.
Using standard default OAL settings QL shows 17.5gr 4227 as max with 32gr in 20VT and 15.2gr as max with 17FB and 20gr. |
