H4198

I guess I will just quit looking for H4198. Just saw a post elsewhere, gent said he contacted Hodgdon and asked when one might see H4198. The response he got was to the effect,that he and the other 200 people that use it were out of luck as it just doesn’t sell enough and they are not going to have any in the foreseeable near future.

I get good results with IMR4198, but getting it In the case with out a bunch of bridging issues is my major complaint.

I guess I will just look for another powder that equals the results I got with the H4198.

I believe it is no more than re-branded AR2207 from our factory and shipped over there, it is still one of the most popular powders for 222/223 size cases

Huh, that’s too bad. I almost have a sufficient stock of brass for my two .17s, and was about to start collecting powder. H4198 was high on my list, but perhaps not anymore? I mean, for my .17AB and .17FB an 8lb jug should load somewhere around 3,000 rounds, so if I can even find two 8lbers I’d be set for several years giving me time to find a replacement. But seeing as how I’ve not even started load development for them, perhaps I would do better to just find that replacement from the get-go, I guess. :/

Well that sucks. Fortunately for me I stumbled upon a deal this past winter and purchased an eight pound jug from a guy giving me a stash of about 13 lbs. - I'll be good for a bit lol

I have been looking for H4198 for about two years. I have seen none on the shelves, 1lb or 8 lb.

I have been using AA2200 for my 17FB and 20VT with a few 222’s. I got my best accuracy with a full throttle load, but I did see some stiff bolts in mid summer. Backed it off a bit and seen no issues. About out of 2200, I know a lot of folks use it, but I was after a temp stable powder for a replacement.
I have a wee bit of H4198 that I used for testing and it was as good as the 2200, so I am sure both rigs would digest it.

Anyone have anything to say about R7? I see it available a fair bit. FYI, in the two little cartridges I run 32/34’s in the 20, and 20 grain in the 17FB.

I may well move forward in trying some powders listed for the 221FB.

I use RL-7 in my 17Mk4 with 20 gr. bullets.
15.7 gr. delivers 3647 fps out of my 24" barrel.
This isn't a max load should your accuracy node require a heavier charge.
RL-7 runs through a powder measure better than H4198.

I don’t run “warp” speed, but I don’t want to turn a greyhound into a dachshund either.
I have a small amount of R7 and may progress forward with it. For nothing else than to get rid of it, if it won’t bump speed up any.
As always accuracy trumps speed.

I am glad that I have several pounds on my shelf. I limit it to my .222's. I would try N130 next.

I still have a small supply of both H-4198 and IMR-4198 but keep seeing Hodgdon's recommendation for Accurate LT-30 and LT-32 as a replacement for both 4198 powders.

Has anyone on here tried either one of them and if so how were your results?
I really want to try some in the 14/221 Walkers to see how they compare against the 4198 powders. I haven't seen the LT powders here locally and hate to pay the Hazmat fees just to try a pound of each.

The LT-32 is supposed to be just above the IMR-4198 on the burn rate chart. It might be just the ticket for the speed mark I want to hit with the light weight bullets.

I'll probably try to add some to the next batch order I make of powders.
