Default Bolt lapping

I have a new standard bolt face size XP-100 bolt that is too tight to close in my receiver. What is the best way to reduce the diameter of the bolt so that it closes smoothly?

Any suggestions from members who have lapped a bolt in?

Thanks,

Gary,

You have to determine what is binding, best way is to cover the back of the locking lugs first in Prussian blue and cycle the bolt and see where the blue is rubbing off. If it is your lugs, generally one of them will be making contact and not the other or one much more so than the other. if only one lug is making contact Use a fine grit lapping compound on the high side (working the bolt) until both lugs make contact then sparingly use it on both lugs to make both of them mate with the bolt recesses equally. If both lugs are making contact lap them together. Lapping the lugs will increase your headspace if the barrel is already fitted. Make sure to thoroughly clean ALL the lapping compound out when done.

Default more info

does the action have a barrel on it , if so it may have a longer bolt nose and you could trim it or it might be the lugs hitting on the rear of the barrel, then trim the front of the lugs.or are you trying to close the bolt on a piece of brass ? headspaced wrong for that reciever and barrel combo? knowing for sure where it is hitting would be the first thing to do.

Some of the replacement bolts need to be fitted to the reciever by cutting the back of the bolt lugs until the headspace is correct.

Default Bolt lapping

Thanks for the information provided so far. My impression is that the bolt body is slightly oversized since I cannot run the bolt far enough forward to bring the locking lugs into play.

I guess I will start with Prussian Blue on the bolt body to see where the contact is. (I actually have this left over from my first attempt at inletting a "99% pre-inletted" stock for a '93 Mauser probably 45 years ago - just saw the tube a couple of days ago!!).

I guess my question is centered on the grit of polishing compound to use and whether to attempt this by applying it to the bolt and working it back and forth in the action. I do not want to increase the internal diameter of the receiver since I have a 223 size bolt face that is also used in this action.

Thanks for any suggestions.

If you don't want to increase the size of the raceway don't lap it with the bolt. Is this an aftermarket bolt?

Default Bolt lapping

It is a new Time Precision bolt. I bought it from Jim Williams who has several for sale, along with quite an assortment of rifles and parts on one of the firearms sites.

Gary

I think the idea of this precision bolt is to ream the action for it to fit.

I think I would try to sell it to someone who wants to "true" an action. Kenny
