I have formed probably 500 20 Vartarg cases and have never neck turned any of them and they all have performed as they should. Rifles used were Cooper M38's

Default nk turning

Lunde, I'm assuming your using 221FB brass formed to 20VT? All my 20VT brass made from 223 donor brass comes out 232-233 which obviously doesn't work real well with a 232nk. What is the neck size of the Cooper?

Loaded my 25 pcs with 35gr Bergers, primers were Rem 7.5's, powder RL7. Primer pockets were snug with the 7.5's. After neck turning them loaded rounds were right at 229-230. Rifle was a Rampro action, Shilen 1-12" #5, 232nk. Little bit of a crush fit which was good, shoulders snapped out, I'm running right at 19.5grs with the 35's, little over 3675fps, in this rifle that's pretty much stepping on it. POI didn't change from previous loads using 223 brass, it was a little higher than reloaded 221FB brass. Maybe case capacity is a little less? This rifle is a legit .5" 5 shot group rifle and group sizes didn't change for the better or worse, couple called flyers which I deserved setting up next to a chump and his SK with gunshow ammo. I don't get anal with case prep so I treated this brass like all my stuff, FL'ed it and used my old specs as to OAL/powder chg that are known to work in this rifle, attached pic of it.

Chuck,
First off, I have no idea of Cooper's neck size.
I formed my brass from Remington .221 Fireball. This was brass from the mid 1990's (supposedly the good stuff - which it is). It gone through multiple firings and still performs with 5 shot 3/8" groups consistently (or less). I neck anneal after 4 firings. My load is 18.0 gr H4198 and Rem 7 1/2 primers - with either 30 gr Bergers or 32 gr Sierras.
I forget the entire quote from Seely Masker on neck turning but it was that with standard chambers, it made "a sloppy condition sloppier".

This thread IS about cases formed from 5.56/.223, as OP stated!

Default 20 VT brass is now available in the store

Thanks to everyone for their time and feedback.

The general consensus is that the brass needs to be necked turned. The necks measure .232" with a bullet loaded which is what most chambers seem to measure out at. I'm sure most of you have a neck turning setup, but for those that don't, we've heard good feedback about the Hornady Lock-N-Load neck turner, so there is a link to it in the 20 VT product description. However it appears to be backordered at Midway, Cabela's, etc.

My personal opinion is that anyone wishing to get into neck turning would be better served going with K&M, Sinclair or PMA equipment. For best results, stick with the manufacturers that have turning mandrels and expand irons that are designed to work together. Just my two cents.

Although I have only 'played' with a small sampling of this brass from High Plains, it appears to be nicely formed. Perhaps this takes the 20 VT one step closer to being considered a mainstream cartridge. Good Lord knows it has A LOT going for it. Happy shooting!

Ramos,
I agree with your suggestions on brands of neck turning equipment. I would add 21st Century to that list of high-quality neck turners.

Mine arrived while I was out of town so I got a late start with this. After reading the previous info, I full length sized the brass and they chambered nicely. Two necks split while sizing. Went to neck turn on my Forrester and I can't get the case to go over the pilot. Now I'm stuck until I figure out a way to expand the necks enough to use my tool. No, I will not buy one of the above mentioned better systems to do 23 brass.
