Scope Buying Help-Opinions
Hey guys,
I've got a couple rifles I need to buy scopes for & need to stay in the mid price range, $350-$500. Both guns are Remington 700 "CLASSICS", one in 221 FB and the other a 222. I want scopes with a minimum of 6x24 power & medium to fine cross hairs for target shooting. Most of my scopes are Zeiss & 1 Nightforce but I can't afford expensive scopes for the two rifles right now. Which scope would you choose? Any opinions and advice would be welcome. Two scopes I've been looking at are both Weaver's, a 6x24 Classic V with the varmint reticle & a Weaver Classic Extreme 8x32x50 that Natchez Shooters Supply carries. I think the Extreme is made in the Philippines. Anyone have any experience with these? Thanks for any help & advice, Jim D |

Not in your magnification range but the Leupold VX2 6-18 scopes are really nice.

I have Leupold VX2 4-12X A/O on similar rifles. I would go for more optical quality rather than more power in a scope.

I bought a Vortex Viper VPR-M-05BDC 6.5-20x 44mm (30mm tube) for just under $400. Decent scope for the money. Several NIB on ebay with free ship. Might fit your needs.

I have owned several Vortex. All had to go back for repairs. I no longer own any Vortex because I don't trust them. If it was on a strictly paper puncher for fun, might be okay. Any gun you need to rely on or compete with not so much.
The most underrated scopes on the market are Nikon, Weaver and Redfield. I have one or two of each and all are very good scopes for the price. Watch on the Weavers that you don't end up with too thick a mildot and cross hair. I had to send my first one back for a thinner version. Sightron also makes a good high power inexpensive scope but they are fairly well known. I would buy any of the four that I could get the best deal on. If we could by Leupold Vx 2 for the price range you are talking I would definitely be looking hard at one of them also. I have not tried the Zeiss Terra but it should be in your range at US prices. |

I'll throw in another vote for the Sightrons. I have their low end ones on rimfires and their high end ones on centerfires. Very satisfied with their performance.

Sightron SII 6-24x should be priced just over $400 at online retailers. Note - not the Bluesky model...while better optics they cost quite a bit more.
I use this scope along side two Sightron SIII and a Nightforce Competition sage rat hunting. That scope and gun kills just as many rats. The SII isn't quite as good as the other three optically, but it holds POI, and cost a fraction of the others. I use a couple Nikon Monarchs too, and really like them. |

I had a couple of the Weaver Classic 6-24's and the image is very grainy in the upper end, anything above 16-18 power was very poor images, at 24 they were so grainy as to be unusable.
I have no experience at all with the other model you mentioned. I sold the Weavers and went to the Leupold VX-2 6-18, they are in your price range, very good image, sharp and crisp, unless you are shooting competition I believe they would serve you very well. drover Last edited by drover; 05-13-2017 at 03:57 PM. |

A couple of things I like about the VX2 6-18 other than glass quality is the Wind Plex reticle which is nice to have for hold off and so far the CDS elevation knob has been 100%. Before this VX2 I only trusted Leupolds with the TSES for repeatable elevation adjustments.

I always consider resale when buying most anything and some brands have better resale then others. Your rifles are Classics which are more of a walking varminter style so I would think about 12x - 18x on the top end is all you really need. I have a couple Nikon 6-18 SF dot reticle scopes on a Tikka T3 and a 17 hmr that work well. Before they were discontinued, I grabbed a couple more that are in the box if you are interested.
