Default firing a .177 pellet in a 17 with primer only

has anyone done this? I was thinking of tinkering with the 17 v-raptor with primer only, then with .5 gr of bullseye.

bad idea/ good idea, your thoughts.
I want to kill spm grackles that keep raiding the bird feeders.

I've seen it done (primer only) with a 22 Hornet. Less noise than a 22 rimfire CB cap. Lightly press the case mouth out of round to hold the pellet and firer away. I dont know if I would add any powder, your on your own there.

I used 22 Cal also, Large rifle magnum primers in a Swift casing. Accuracy was NOT outstanding. Maybe the 17 will work better. I think the pellets are .177 dia. so they should be nice and snug in the bore. They will of course have quite a jump to engage the rifling. All you can do is try and see how they shoot. Make sure the first one clears the bore, you don't want a traffic jam...…….

I did it with a 17 fireball. what do you want to kill with it? Not much I hope.

black birds and starlings would be the targets. I did fire one this evening but nothing on paper. it was super quiet especially with ear muffs on.

found one guy who was using 1 gr blue dot in a .22 hornet case for 600 fps .

here is a quote from his post on another website

" I am working with the Hornet right now on this. I am using Blue Dot powder. 1 grain BD and a #7.5 rem primer is totally silent and gives about 600FPS . 1.5 grains is really good--- penetrates a 1/2 inch pine board and is still subsonic. 2.0 grains starts to go sonic---sometimes----and 2.5 grains always gives me a crack/sonic"

I think it would be necessary to tilt the rifle up to put the powder to the back of the case.

Yes; it works. If you get too much power behind a pellet, it can blow the skirt into a hoop that sticks in the bore while the front goes downrange with little accuracy.

There's a little info here:

Or- you could go this route and have more fun!
Weirhauch KT .177 or .22
This one is a .177 and works splendidly to 56 yards, furthest gopher.
The scope is a 3-12x44 or 46mm with mil dots and 1/2 mil dot stadia wires.

well fellow saubiarians I have decided to go a different direction than the 17 pellets. think I will go with a 17 gr vmax bullet and maybe 4895. you can't get enough 4895 in the little case to build much pressure. the velocity should be low but high enough so the bullet doesn't get stuck in the barrel.

I opened up the primer pocket on a 223, 221fb and a 17 Mach IV to accommodate a 209 primer. Basically an air rifle around 1000 FPS with the 22s.

Just push the primer in by hand but I had a small brass rod to poke them out (kind of a PIA). Very quiet and fun. Taking it seriously do up a few pieces of brass for faster reloads.

I’ve stuck a 17gr vmax going with the low velocity in my 17SM... it was just way too much more fun at 2600-3500 FPS... and that was quiet compared to my others.

Of neighbors would be different... but last night I popped a groundhog with my 6.5 pistol... the worst part was 15 minutes earlier I really made my wife made when I took a shot at a target out the west side of my house while she was grading papers on the deck... Even though I warned her she about crapped her pants... I really didn’t want to warm her again when I saw that big ole hog about 76 yards out down by my barn

Now what was it you was asking lol
