Speaking of fancy CZ wood. I've got a .17-M2. I mentioned it to the CZ guy and he said it made sense, he said about the time CZ decided to get rid of their up-graded wood you could purchase they just dumped all they had and that was about the time they brought out the .17-M2. The CZ is on the bottom. The other is a Cooper .17 Ackley Hornet.
In this picture the CZ is on the top. Real pretty wood but not very consistent. I just realized I did a full on Hi-Jack . Very sorry!!

This is a full length photo as you can see nothing that would say Deluxe or even English just the odd checking pattern and Pachmayr pad and yet? I have a fair number of CZ's in rimfire and the 527 action but never did win the "Wood Lottery" on the plus side I have won the shoots remarkably well lottery on a few occasions. My stocks run from what you would find on the average RemWinRuger to pretty decent but nothing like the 17-M2 shown.

Did CZ advertise these as having French Walnut stocks or was that something that grew into a fact on the internet? The reason I ask is that the stocks all look like a better grade of water streaked American Black Walnut or possibly even Claro Walnut from the color.
Just curious as I'm no CZ expert. I own a few CZ rifles, but that's as far as my involvement goes............ -BCB

Can't speak to various Internet rumors posing as fact but in the GUN DIGEST list of GUN VALUES in the notes section it says "Add 170 for English Walnut stock" as opposed to French.

The Hornet is nice but my 527 American in .223 (1:12 twist) is a lot better to my eyes at least...
And it does go to the range, but not hunting, at least not yet. Likes Fiocchi 40 Vmax pretty well... |

I have owned 11 CZ527's, still have 8, all but one are now walnut, one laminate .223 and previously a Kevlar Varminter. The worst are plain but serviceable. Several are nice.
This is my 6.5 Grendel which has very decent wood and the "deluxe" style checkering, I've had it since they first came out. You just never know, which is why many CZ fans call it the wood lottery. |

My 527 in 6.5 could be yours plainer sister. When I received it I thought it was a "Rustic". I think if you look carefully at how the grain runs thru yours you'll see it's structure goes mostly horizontally instead of the usual vertical grain. At least that's how mine runs. Just as there was a run on highly figured stocks when CZ left the "We'll Pick You A Nice One" business quite a few of the first issue 6.5 Grendel's were pretty plain. Hazard of dealing with a natural product.

Some of mine have nice, straight-grained walnut, but most of them look like they were picked off Ruger's woodpile. At least they shoot pretty good.

Had to chuckle when I read Glenn's comment. An old buddy from school had a favorite saying something like "beauty is what beauty does."
