Keeping Pelts
Went out a couple of days ago to call up a fox to get a full taxidermy job done for a mate. I called in two to about eighty yards, and took the biggest one side-on. He was 43 inches tip to tip. A nice dog. I deliberately kept away from the head and took a side-on body shot using 35 grain v-maxes from a cz527 hornet using 10.5 gns of win 296.As usual with these pills, there was no exit. I'm guessing around 2800 to 2900 fps. If you want skins without damage, these are the cat's pyjamas!

Good. We know the gun, bullet, velocity and range.
What cartridge was used? Thank you. Hope it's not too late in the season and it don't go hair slip on you.

It was a cz 527 hornet. No, I'm down in OZ, and it's Autumn here. It shouldn't slip.

Curious mind asks: What's "hair slip?"

It's when you don't get a critter cool enough fast enough before, or after for that matter, you relieve him of his hide.
The fur releases from the leather and pulls out. Called hair slip. Starts around the ears on most animals, ime.

Inadequate cooling and/or poor salting can cause slip, but so can shooting stuff when it is at or just before their normal molt season. As in deer, fox, coyote loose their winter hair in late spring, can really accelarate hair slipagge.

Happens to people as well, mostly men. Luckily, hide removal is not part of the scenario.

Also it will slip if they start to have mange(?). We shot about a dozen this year with the very early stages of mange. We had them skinned out within 10mins of death and the hair still slipped. Adam Last edited by ab_bentley; 05-03-2012 at 12:27 AM. Reason: Spelling Nazis |

You are a man after my own heart, Lunde Sr. On our local newspaper forum, I'm known as "The Spelling Nazi," for my efforts in that direction.
Got some squirrels running around the yard in the early stages of mange. It seems to keep the population in check without having to shoot 'em. We always have a dieoff, and I have yet to find evidence of a squirrel skeleton. Maybe they crawl into a hole in a tree and die?? I dunno. |
