.17 Berger Differences
I have been using Berger .17 cal 25gn projectiles which are PN172025m, labelled Varmint, Match Grade. Some time ago, I bought some replacement projectiles, thinking they were the same. However, on closer examination, they are PN17008, though still labelled 25gn Varmint, Match Grade. On checking them with a Hornady Comparator insert, the base to ogive measurement is different. These newer ones are longer from base to ogive. The question is, will they shoot as well as the older ones? Anyone struck this? Also. it pays to check every time, because this could have resulted in a projectile jammed in the lands!

PS: Hollow -point is the same size in both,- very small.

How much longer? There are lot to lot variations. I've seen .015" in the bearing surface of Berger 6mm 105 hybrids. That was just in two different lots. In that particular gun the load didn't end up changing.

PN 172025m = .3355" or 8.52mm base to ogive.
PN 17008 = .3145" or 7.98mm base to ogive Actually, the 172025m is the longer. That's a fair bit of difference. |

I agree its a lot. But I've seen almost that much difference in the same bullet with just a different lot number. I personally would work up loads separately for each bullet and then you'll know if YOUR gun shows a difference.
