Shooting Jack Rabbits in the wide open sage country a few days ago with my CZ Varmint 17 HH I noticed that it was louder (a more sharp crack) than my CZ American 22K hornet shooting 40gr Nosler HP's at about 2900 FPS, 14.0gr of AA1680.
Both rifles were shot on consecutive days............so going off memory(that could be scary). Anyway, i'm pretty certain I was very pleased with the 22K hornet noise level and noticed a sharper/higher pitched crack with the .17 HH However, both rounds are VERY quiet in my opinion, albeit I'm used to shooting 221 Fireball/222/223 and larger cases. Of course, my Dad was shooting his Rock River Predator Pursuit 16" barrel, so it was a pretty stark contrast to what I was working with as far as noise level. |

Try some Trail Boss in your .17HH. That ought to be relatively quiet.

I feel the hearing damage most of us shooters have is so
varied there's not much use in comparing what one shooter hears to what another does. IF you want LOUD, try a .30 Carbine in a 7 1/2" Blackhawk with H110. OR same coal in a .45 Colt. For a quiet shooter in town I use a .17M2 and so far no one's called the cops on me. I shoot whatever I wish inside the shop at the trap though. Even Dad's .375 H&H some, and lots of FF loads in this .358 U/M. Just 10.0g Red Dot for those but it still pops plenty. IF your ears ring after shooting, it's to loud and furthering the damage.

22H very quiet and if downloaded with Trail Boss, almost silent. 17 H and 17 FB are both FAR louder but the 17 FB is louder the the 17 HH. Both 17s downloaded with TB can be made pretty quiet but still not as quiet as the 22 H.

Loudness vs. caliber...
For the same cartridge powder capacity, as the caliber increases, the noise level decreases. So, in a Hornet powder capacity and comparing similar loads, going from a 17HH on through to a 270 REN, the noise level decreases substantially. I have had most all the caliber offerings of both the 30 Carbine (Garin cartridges) and the Hornet cartridges. I now have a 24 Calhoon (6mm K-Hornet that is VERY quiet to the piercing "Crack" of a 17HH. Quieter than my 17 Mach 2's....George's suggestion on the 30 Carbine is a good option for quiet. Or, the 270 REN is a great cartridge, also, for your purpose.

A 22 Hornet with either 45 gr or 50 gr SPT using 12.5gr of AA2200 (full case) runs about 2100fps, and is much quieter and has a "duller" sound than even a 22WMR.

All I know is last fall I was out with my BIL (49) & my nephew (25) & they proceed to sight in his .300 SM. I was 30' behind them & it really hurt my ears. They asked if I wanted to shoot it, I said OK. Let me get my ears. (Muffs) They were like..."Seriously?"...I said "yep". I shot a few...with ears & then decided I'd had enough. They proceed to shoot a couple of boxes.
They had absolutely no hearing protection & said they were fine. The both said it was too late for them anyway. That night & 2 days later, they both said that their ears were killing them. No thank you. Last edited by TOU; 01-08-2017 at 05:06 PM. |

Compared to your 22 Hornet with commercial loads, about the same with similar barrel lengths. Last edited by 17tbs; 01-08-2017 at 03:40 AM. |
