Default Different appearance of H4198

I just opened a new container of H4198. The powder is black in color vs the greenish color and the kernels appear to be longer and a smaller diameter than all the previous H 4198 that I have used. Has anyone using this powder noticed this change?

Your description sounds like IMR4198.

I have not heard anything about it changing, but until late last week I still thought that the earth was flat. Sometimes I'm the last person to know something.

Bring it by and compare to mine.

Think I have a full jug, most likely not opened yet

I seem to recall H4198 has been sourced from both Thales/ADI and GD Valleyfield (Dupont in CA) over the recent years

I’ve been loading IMR4198 this week and that what it sounds like. Matter of fact, all the imr4198 that I’ve ever loaded has been black. I also have a can of H4198 so I’ll check the difference when I get home.

This is a new Hodgdon container with the extreme powder label. I have sent an inquiry to Hodgdon but have not received a reply.

IMR 4198 and H4198 will be combined and the IMR no longer offered. So we are now left with H4198 and they may use the IMR specs.

That sounds very logical from rider's initial post and description of the H4198 that he opened.

I have used IMR4198 in 17 Remington rifles for years and it has given me great results in both velocity and accuracy. I tried H4198 in the same cartridge a few years back in two different 17 Remington rifles and it did not give me either of the results that the IMR version gives.

So if the new H4198 is the old IMR4198, I'm happy....

Default Name and spec

Sounds unethical, if not plain dangerous, to keep the name and change the spec. I know that the difference is slight (in this case), but where do you draw the line? I also find it hard to believe that the company that has kept H110 and W296 is going to invite a lawsuit by swapping label and spec like that

Don't you think they and others will do some testing and come up with new start and max loadings for folks to follow, with the powder change ?
