Default I hate small calibers...

In the last year or so I've deceided that I'm perfectly happy with my 17cal's. I got rid of a bunch of stuff I haven't shot for years and swore to myself that I wouldn't give in to the urge to look any further than my 3 beloved 17's...(Well except for maybe a #1 to do a 17AH on thanks to Rick In Oregon's mentoring)
Then today at the range,,,, I was invited to shoot one of the old timers' Contender in 5mm Mag, shooting the new (well sorta new) Centurion ammo.
Now I've got this burning desire to get my hands on a 5mm.
Even worse,,, I've never been a TC guy (AT ALL) but I wouldn't even mind if it was a Contender..

Any suggestions??

Very slowly....back out the door and keep both hands on your wallet until you're way down the street.

And don't look back over you shoulder while you're getting away....

Yeah, I know what ya mean... I hate em too

The beauty of the Contender is the opportunity to shoot both CF and RF... You know just incase ya get bored someday down the road with factory rimfire stuff...

not to mention that with a few grs of powder, making your own bullets....

You can save your way to wealth... A wealth of fun that is!!!

Of course it was be great fun to have a handgun 5mm Mag too

I think the 20 Squirrel is another good one, MarinePMI and I compared the two and very similar they are. Plus with the Squirrel you can find brass cheap and need only one form die and you get those 32gr's going 2900 to 3000 FPS if needed.

that TC made the 10" Contender barrels back when the 5mm first came out, but discontinued them quite a while ago.
The one I shot was a handgun like GL's, but without the beautiful stocks..

I'm more of a long gun kinda guy, so I'd only go with the Contender package if I could find a manufacturer that makes a 16-20" barell..
I wouldn't mind one of the older Remmy's either if I ran across a nice one, like GL's sweet little 591...

FWIW... I don't remember TC offering the 5mm in anything except a 10" octagon barrel. With my set of TC catalogs I could research it, but don't think that is needed here because you'd never find a carbine in that caliber available even if they did make them. I sold my two 10" oct 5mm barrels over the last 2-3 years (one mint and the other still NIB), so you do see them come up for sale now and then. Better yet if you want a factory 10" barrel would be to contact Ed Kirkpatric - he'd find you one faster than anybody else could.

I imagine OTT could make you a barrel no problem in any length you want, but I've heard their lead times are very long now days. Any of the other custom TC barrel shops could do it too, but since none list it you'd probably have to buy the reamers or at least help buy them. With ammo available again I'm kind of surprised none of them are making them yet. They ought to know the interest is there.

EDIT: Ooops! OK, checked the TC site... they do list #4198 as a 23" 5mmMag for the Contender. Your problem is solved.

L.
