If you're ok running it as a single shot something like a 17 or 20 Beggs off of the 220 Russian case could be cool but for me I'd default to "easy" and if a 17 was my caliber of choice it would be a 17-222.

Probably the cheapest premium brass you can get, your current action would require zero change/s to run it as a repeater to feed flawlessly, standard 222 bushing die set, it would pretty much be like hitting the easy button.

Matt 3479, Remington changed the location of the ejector when they brought out the 221 and 17 Fireball. They work fine. The original 223 bolts won't eject well with the short case of the FBs.

I'm shooting old Hornady 75 gr A-Max's. I still have about 1200 left until I need to find a new bullet. Debating either 75gr HPBT or the ELD's.

Okay thank you, guess I’ll be going with 17 rem, 17-222, 17-223, 20-222, or maybe one of the 222 variants (17/20) ai

The only thing I hate about the 222 and 223 is trimming the brass if you shoot alot, I'd do the AI version if you have access to the reamer for the ease of not having to hardly trim the brass after fireformed.
Fireforming loads can be very accurate also.

Yes apparently, feeding can be an issue when converting a Rem 223 to VT or FB. That is why the title to my post indicated a single shot configuration. I should have mentioned that in the post body as well.

I have converted 3 Rem 223's to 20 VT's with solid single shot adapters glued in. These were built for colony PD extermination. I have not experienced the fired case ejection issues that others have encountered.

It sounds like you already have some fancy stuff. Why not just do a 223? If you put an accurate, tight twist barrel on it you can shoot probably 80 different types of bullet (which might come in handy these days). Brass is cheap, and so is factory ammo. Also if you get bored with it, a 223 would be easier to sell or trade.

I’d be open to a 17/20-222 ai. Little extra speed never hurt. That said it wouldn’t be shot a whole bunch. Any idea’s on speeds of a 17/222ai with 25-30ge bullet or a 20-222ai with a 35 gr bullet?

Well I have the 223 with the 8 twist shooting 80gainers currently. Also shoots amazing with 40, 52, 55 and 60 gr bullets! Thing just hammers. Only one I struggled with was the 70gr rdf but don’t want to quit on it yet as it has great balance of bc and speed

Have not shot or played with the 20-222 in either standard or AI version, but from what I have with my 20SCC ( 20VT improved) I would guess the 25-30 grainers would run around 3900 or a little more.
The 35's in the area of 3800.
