I'm making a mistake with the Redding Competition Seating Die
I’m using a 20 Vartarg Redding Competition seating die with 40 gr Vmax bullets.
I ran across this issue once before and don’t remember how I got past it. I know what my measurement is up to the ogive. I started with the ogive touching the lands and seated 5 rounds, no problem. I know the seating stem does not work off the ogive, but just below the Vmax plastic tip. Next, I reduced the setting by -.02 from the lands, no problem. Then I wanted to start reducing by -.05, -.07 and -.10 off the lands. However, the ogive is now below the neck and I can’t take a reading to the ogive nor will the bullet seat any further down since the case has now bottomed out on the Hornady bullet comparator. I double checked the seating instructions and the die is setup properly. What am I doing wrong? |

Use a .223 seating stem.

Redding makes a VLD seating stem that may work.

I'm not sure I follow what you're doing. However, if you can make rounds with bullets at the lands, then you can just use the markings on the seater die knob to make them shorter by a known amount.
I have also used the seater stem as a measurement tool. Just take it out of the die and measure something known to establish a zero. |

Pretty soon I am going to watch them all in reverse order so that I can watch those F Class guys GO HOME and leave us alone so that we can shoot Highpower Rifle. |

This morning I took the die apart, cleaned it and found very small traces of copper built up over a time period. The copper particles would not allow the seating stem to go further down. Works great now that its clean. |
