Default 17 hornet cz 527 likes and dislikes

first off I like the little rifle and the 17 hornet case.
here are some of the rifles likes and dislikes. the little rifle like the bullets seated just right with a jump to the lands. the only difference between the 2 bottom loads was the seating depth.
now it's time to list the rifle in the classifieds for sale as it is the ballistic duplicate of the 17 v-raptor.

what powder Bob?

Can't get 11.7gr in the VR case with most.

What's the velocities of these loads?
or did you get that far?

foxhunter: Since I don't have a 17 V-Raptor I think I will keep my 17hh 527 CZ varmint.

I am brand new to 17 centerfire and jumped in the 17HH because it standardized things and will fill the gap beyond the 22 hornet and below my 243 AI (Barrel Burner).

I went right to the CFE BLK maybe "just because". I use LIL GUN exclusively in my 22 hornet, but, it sure seems like the CFE BLK is it for my 17 hornet.

Thank you for the great post on your results with the 25 gr bullets. I arrived at the same 11.7 with the bergers but my gun is playing hob with the 25 vmax. Things are almost identical to your posted targets.

Are you using a hornady comparator with the .17 insert to get your COL's that you posted. I think that is what I am reading on your targets for the COLS under the 1.7xx SAAMI spec.

Please bear with me because I really like this CZ with the V barrel. I can shoot steadily without overheating and have a couple of 20gr loads that are just fine. (12.8gr CFE BLK and could probably go to 12.9 with the VMAX).

Please share anything further knowledge on your findings with the 17HH specifically in the 527.

"is playing hob with the 25 vmax" not sure what that phrase means. theoretically the 17hh should shoot the 25 gr vmax due to it's 1-9 twist

the case over all length is the average of 3 cartridges measured from the base to the actual tip.

foxhunter, sorry about that. "Playing Hob" is an old guy's way of saying it is a problem that is "tormenting me". No straight forward solution.

I can't get the 25gr Hornady VMAX nor the Hornady HP to "tighten up" the groupings. I am getting basically the same groups you show on your target. Your bottom right Berger target at 1.687 COA is where I like things.

I shoot hornady brass, GM-205M primer, 11.7gr CFE and the Berger 25gr at 1.48" using a Stoney Point comparator with the hornady 17 insert. This load gvies me an AVG VEL of 3261, SD = 13, and ED = 32. The groups are equivalent to your bottom right grouping. I am happy with the Berger Load at 11.7gr of CFE.

I am going to try a few loadings based on the slower N-120 powder to see if I get a tighter grouping with the 25gr Hornady's (VMAX and HP).

There may be a reason why Hornady does not make a 17HH factory load with the 25gr VMAX.

Thanks to all that make this forum great.
