527 Varmint 17 Hornet
I sold my Ruger 77/22 Hornet last night and placed my order with Buds today. It should be here in a week or so. I wanted to like it, but I wasn't really happy with the Ruger. After I shimmed the bolt and lightened the trigger it shot well, but I just wasn't satisfied with it. I really wanted a 17 Hornet when I bought it. I should have just waited until I found what I wanted.
Now to figure out what optic to put on the 527. I already have rings for it(Warne 2B1M) and I have a Simmons 4-12x40 as a temporary optic. I'll have to save up for something else. The only thing I really need is ammo. I'll get reloading components over the winter and get some ammo loaded that way, but for now I'll just shoot factory ammo until I get everything else purchased. This is my first CZ, is there anything I should know about it, good or bad? |

You will love a CZ. First piece of advice is to clean it really, really well before ever shooting it. CZ uses a preservative in the bores for overseas shipping, and you should clean it well before shooting. I have two CZ527's, a 22 Hornet and a 221FB. Both are 0.5 MOA rifles with hand loads. In fact, my Hornet did 0.4MOA with factory silver box 46gr Winchester ammo. The FB came from the factory with a 2.5lb trigger unset and 12oz set. What's not to like? Enjoy.

Cleaning the rootbeer out of the bore is a pain.

Mine's a 0.25" shooter with factory Hornady 20Gr superformance ammo. The one thing I DON'T care for is the safety. It is backwards to what I'm used to but I mainly shoot mine at gophers so it's not a big issue. I restocked mine with the Varmint Kevlar stock, It fits me well, but it shot just as well with the walnut stock.
If you want a good optic on the cheap consider this: https://www.natchezss.com/nikon-mona...c-reticle.html GREAT scope for the price. |

I love my 527V 17HH!!! Shoots factory nicely and the limited handloading I've done has been a success.
One trick I use on my 527's to remember the safety is think of cocking a hammer to fire, bringing the safety back. |

I second what others said. The safety bugs me as it's a muscle memory thing with every other rifle. You need to be prepared to love the rifle in it's factory form outperforming some custom rigs at half the price.... What's not to like

Thanks for the replies.
I read a lot on various forums before making this purchase, overwhelmingly good stuff, a few bad(mostly crown issues), and a couple "QC really let that pass". Not the norm on reviews. Most people go to the internet to complain, bad news travels fast kind of thing. Not so with the 527 reviews. CZ seems to have gotten this model right. I had read about scrubbing the gun before shooting it, I hadn't realized it was such a pain, but I'm sure I'll get it done. I've also read about the safety being backwards. I really don't think it will be a problem, just an annoyance until I get used to it. Ben, that scope will be on my short list. I really like Nikon scopes. I'm also looking at the Weaver Kaspa 6-18x44 and the Bushnell Legend Ultra HD 4.5-14x44. I'll be reloading for this gun eventually, but for now I'll just shoot factory ammo. Gotta build up the brass supply and get dies. I currently have LIL'Gun and H110 for powder. I've heard that A1680 and CFE-BLK are both good powders for this round too. Any other suggestions? Primers I currently have are CCI 400, CCI BR4, Rem 6 1/2, and Fed 200(I think, I can't remember the #). |

As well as my CZ 17 hornet shoots the 20 grain vmaxs. I gotta admit that it likes the 25''s a little better with AA2200 and CCI 400 primers. Stays just under.5 very consitantly. The AA2200 dispenses much smoother and consistantly than AA1680 and no signs of pressure.

I have one and like it a lot as mentioned above. I just finished forming 500 WW cases and now have to finalize a load with the new brass. Not on a velocity quest, probably start with AA2200 and AA1680. It shoots factory 20 grainers in the 1/2 inch-ish range and I even won the wood lottery on mine.
You'll love it, congrats !!

Amazing!!!!!
A buddy & I both got one a few weeks ago. I haven't shot mine yet but with Hornady 25 gr. factory ammo, his is shooting 5 shot groups less than 1/2 moa. If mine shoots like that, I seriously doubt I'll be reloading. I also bought some 20gr. American Eagle's to try in mine. He shot one 5 shot group that a dime would barely cover.
What's not to like about that stuff? Straight out of the box and cleaned, no bedding or anything!!! Jim D--- SE Texas |
