Has anyone checked brass life with the hotter loads? How much powder fowling is there with the CFE BLK powder. I am not seeing much copper with A1680 but would be nice to see a little less powder fowling. Looks like I need to do a little load work. I "might" be going after Utah ground squirrels in the spring, and need alot loaded up.

moorepower: I am on my 3rd loading and am finding a few cases that have hit the 1.350" case length. I am trimming them back to 1.340".
This would be the first trim on my Hornady brass that began as NEW. What I watch is how long my "new" brass goes between the first trim and the second trim. I really haven't owned the caliber/rifle/brass long enough to judge brass life. What do you consider "hotter loads"? I am shooting the 20 gr Nosler tipped at 3685 fps and the Berger 25's at 3264 fps. Factory Hornady 25gr HP chronographs at 3449 fps AVG VEL in my CZ. v/r rch |

southernman showed some close to 3800 with the 20 grain bullets. Thats what I was looking at as "hotter" loads. So far I am keeping the 20's around 3650. I have only shot factory 25hp loads, and I am not sure how much of the brass will be usable due to loose primer pockets.

Moorepower, I understand. At 12.8gr CFE-BLK with 20gr VMAX I am getting 3748 AVG VEL with a SD of 17.4 and an ED of 43. The accuracy is good. Not great, but, good. I say this because the factory 20gr VMAX shoots tighter (but slower) than the CFE-BLK in my gun.
I will keep an eye on the primer pockets and see if they are loosening to early. I may also "slow it down" a touch and see if I can match the bugholes I get with the factory. thanks to all who make this forum great. v/r rch |

I tried most powders I could get my hands on, in Canada,
H4198, 4227, littlegun, blackout, H110, and N120, would have liked to try1680, but wasn't aviable. N120 gave by far the most consistent accuracy, but speed at 3300-3400 N120 metres very uniformly, and thus easy to load consistently. Little gun was the most erratic, with spreads of 500 fps, and the odd blowern primer, I wouldn't recommend looking at other powder options. H110 and 4227 good accuracy but slow, 3200 ish H4198 and CFE black out, both very accurate, in both my CZ rifles, but blackout giving a 300 fps over H4198 and easier to get in to case. I up up over ten loads on sum brass, annealed at six firings. One trim, no brass loss another than ejecting them into the grass, (wish they came in neon orange ) they flippen dissapear in dry dead grass. Have not noticed, any real amount of copper build up, with N120, H4198 or blackout, I clean with wipeout every 500 odd rounds, and normal oil/solvent every outing. Haven't seen any real amount of blue on a patch yet. Plenty of carbon at times. Last edited by southernman; 11-12-2017 at 07:06 PM. Reason: Add info. |

Thanks. I am not seeing alot of copper with the A1680, but LOTS of black. I like the A1680 because it drops relly well with the Hornady pistol powder insert and flows very well. I weigh every drop but I almost never saw more than .1 variance in weight. I always wonder about brass life, unless it is really cheap brass like a .223.

Dinner loads
You could use lite load of h4198 and a 25gr Hndy HP, brass life is fine in my 17vha with h4198 for all loads, even the highest velocity, QL says pressures are right around 46k psi to 47k psi.
Aside from using a lower velocity and a jacketed bullet, you could try a flake powder, and get pure lead to cast in your N.O.E. 32 gr bullet molds. Accuracy is about a half inch at 50 yards. Accuracy suffers if you go over 1800fps with pure lead. Best accuracy was at just subsonic to 900fps and 1400 to 1300fps. My best group was 3 shots in about .6" at 100yds using 1.4gr HS700X and the pure lead bullets coming in at 33.4gr as cast. You can get between 800fps and 1800fps using blue dot, 800fps to 1400fps using High-Skor 700x. Try to mind your weights CAREFULLY, Blue Dot is less energetic than IMR HS700X, two tenths of a grain makes a big difference in pressures. Trailboss is as close to foolproof as is possible. I weigh each charge with these sized cases and any flake powder as they have potentially dangerous pressure spikes if you "accidentally " add a few tenths extra, or God forbid accidentally double charge your case with a powder like 700x. This one below was fired at point blank range into dry fracking sand at 1010fps, it weighed 33.1gr after impact, and started out at 33.4gr unfired. Brass life with these lite loads is probably 50+ reloads, I am up to 30 plus reloads on a pair of reformed 4.6x30 DAG cases, no neck sizing is even necessary. Pressures are probably down around 18,000 psi, primers are unflattened even the slightest bit. http://www.saubier.com/forum/picture...&pictureid=754 Quote:
