17 Garin Alliant Power Pro 300-mp starting load
G'day folks, after many months of waiting for people and bits, I finally have
my AR15 in 17 Garin in hand and I have my cases formed, trimmed and neck turned ready to go. Now the fun starts. I would like some guidance on a starting load for 300mp powder in the 17 garin using 20g Vmax bullets. I can find some info on it's use in 17 vha and I assume it will work well in the Garin. So if anyone can give me a starting point I would be grateful. I know I have to work up slowly and happy to take my time, just need a starting point. Thanks in advance |

I have a 17 Badger that is very similar to your 17 Garin in my opionion the alliant power pro is to fast a powder for it. I messed with AA1680 in my Badger for a few years and then one day decided to try AA2200 and I liked the results with 2200 better. Case fill and stability were better with 2200 also. Anyway just my 2 cents.

Thanks guys, I should have said I can't get accurate powders here in NZ hence the need to find something else. It seems that 300-mp has given good accuracy and speed in 17 hornet and 17vha according it the internet ,and I can get it here. I can get VV n120 and 110 but they are more expensive.

I would be careful of low case capacity you can get pressure swings that's what was happening with AA1680 in my Badger 2200 fixed that. I would start with 120 if you can get that. Your Garin case has more internal volume than the hornets and VHA if I remember correctly.

IDK exactly what size a 17 Garin is, and how it compares with a 17VHA, but I can tell you where to start if it IS similar.
I run 9.0gr of 300MP in my AR in 17VHA, 10.0 in my bolt gun. 9.8 in my 17HK ( 17VHA with 35 degree shoulder) for fireforming and then 9.9 or so. 8.8-9.0 is where I would start if it's close to the same size. I run regular Fed 205 primers in mine. Good luck and post pics!

Perhaps I should add that these are all 20gr bullets, wet moly coated. I still think the numbers would apply to naked bullets.

I hope you have figured this out by now but the 17 Garin is almost the same capacity as the 17 Ackley bee. 18.3 on the garin and 18.8 on the Ackley bee.
there is quite a bit of 17 Ackley bee data around. I think the powders you are looking at may be too fast except n120. if you can get it reloader 7 and h 4198 sc work great in the 17 Ackley bee. http://www.surestrikesystem.com/technical/loadData.php
