Default 20 VT Barrel Twist?

Looking to take a VSSF2 that i have in 17 FB that was never a great shooter and make it into a 20 VT. I am looking at a Benchmark barrel. I was figuring a 9 twist and was planning on shooting mainly 32 gr or 35. However looking through a few posts it seems most go with the 11 twist. Will 9 twist be too much?

A 12 twist is what you want for 32 and 35 grain bullets. I have 3 that will shoot 32-40 grain bullets but some guys have trouble with 39 and 40's in a 12 so if you ever want to shoot 40 grainers go with an 11 twist.

The best all around twist on the 20 VT or even most all 20 calibers is 1/11, by far used more than any other by those into the 20 calibers. Bill K

In spring 2020 I re-barreled a 20 VT from 1/11 to 1/10 twist for a client who kills 10-20k PDs a year and shoots 40 Vmax exclusively.

His 1/11 VT's had always been very accurate. The 1/10 was an experiment to see if there was more killing power from the extra rotation, i.e., more red mist and aerobatics.

His observations over the 2020 season were that there definitely seemed to be more spin resulting from the 1/10 twist. However he never really gave the new 1/10 barrel a paper agg test with the 40 VM's to see if it was more or less accurate from a BR standpoint.

I have a 20 Extreme with an 8 twist. Built it like that to shoot the Berger 55 grain. I've tried other weights and have found that it will shoot (and group very nicely) the 40 grain Bergers. 35's are all over the place, 32's keyhole and smaller don't make it to the target. I would think that (as the rest of the guys are saying) an 11 or 12 twist would be optimal for what you want to shoot.

Thanks everyone. 11 twist is what I will go with.

Any comments about brass choice between Rem, Nosler and Lapua. Just reading about neck turning requirements with Lapua brass. Someone told me that neck turning isn’t needed with Rem brass? Rem brass is half price here. Lapua is $124/100. I have some of it for my 221 and know it’s good brass but hoping not to neck turn.

I just paid $79 per 100 of the .221 Lapua brass last night from Midway. That's the same price I paid for it back in June, so no gouging going on with Midway.

My pricing is north of the border. Everything is pricey up here.

Just reading back on neck turning threads so that’s why my question. Seems that there will be minimal neck turning if I go with Rem brass but brass life won’t be as long as with the other two but then I will be probably looking at neck turning which I hate.

For what it's worth most 20vt have a .232 neck so you need to turn. I have read of some using a .235 reamer and that may allow you to get away without turning. I turn the necks before I neck down to 20 cal as this puts the end of the cut on the shoulder.
