WTB- Winchester Heavy Varmint
Hens teeth! Looking for a Winchester heavy varmint in 223 for an older family member. He sold his years ago and like most do regretted that sale. Looking for the Heavy SS barrel with the blued action and varmint stock.
Thank you! |

Bought mine in May of '95 when they first came out. Been one of my favorite PD rifles, although I originally got it to build a match rifle for shooting DCM High Power. Years later I found one in 243 Win also. No, mine is not for sale. As I recall, they all had either Wilson Match barrels or Schneider barrels, and are definite shooters. Hope he finds one somewhere.

You might try to find a stealth model also which came after the heavy varmint 223. They both are very heavy rifles. I think the stealth will not disappoint you. I have both versions in 223.

As I recall, the HVSS was made in 223, 22-250, 220 Swift, 243 and 308.

Nice guns that could shoot very well after some bedding work. Barrels were sourced from Wilson and the stocks were H.S. Precision. The same barrelled action was used in the later Coyote series guns which used a laminated stock. The Stealth series are sometimes confused with these. The barrelled actions weren't anywhere close to the quality of the Heavy Varmint and original Coyote series guns, though. Good shootin' -Al |

If any of you buy or have a Mod 70 Heavy Varmint and a Coyote made in the 97-98 time frame be sure to check the breech of the barrel They were push feed actions. My HV 220 came completely apart on the 12th or 13th shot. I was just breaking in the barrel with moderate load. Winchester had coned the breech on the push feed barrel. Case head totally unsupported. I then had Eddie check my 223 Coyote Push feed, that too was coned but not nearly as bad. I had never shot it so don't know how it would have handled the pressures. IF you own a Mod 70 push feed , please check or have check the barrel is really for a push feed action. What do you think the odds are I had the only two done that way.
