Anyone ever do a 17 VarTarg Turbo?? (17/222)
So I'm contemplating a future build. I have a good amount of time behind a Mach IV, but I'd like to "standardize" if you will to one case for all my projects - in this case the 222. Therefore I'm exploring 17s on the 222....I've found a 17 Thunderbolt (222 to 17 with a 30 degree shoulder and 222 length neck), of course the Javelina, and I'm curious about the Kindler - VarTarg Turbo. Whatcha' got, guys? What else should I look for? This will be for field rats and the occasional close-quarters yote. Thanks.

Believe Brad at small caliber club, as done both the 17VT and Turbo. Bill K

Just curious here, but why not just build a straight 17-222?

I’ve always thought that about a straight 17 Rem.
It does most of what most 17 cal. shooters want. But then, why not? Ken.

I have the 17 Rem, 17-222 and a 17 Jav Imp.
The most logical is the 17-222 (cheaper dies). But the 17 Jav Imp is basically the 17-222 performance with a little smaller case capacity. It’s very efficient. I just always thought you’re supposed to build one if everything...

I think the .20 VarTarg Turbo case is very close to the .17 Javelina.
The VarTarg Turbo case is 1.610 inches long, 1.280 inches at the shoulder, and the shoulder is 30 degrees. The dimensions come from the Western Powders Handloading Guide. I can't remember the dimensions of the Javelina, just going on memory of a picture of the two of them. Maybe someone has a copy of Kindler's Sensational 17s handy and can post the dimensions. I think it might be easier to find a set of .17 Javelina dies, but .17 VarTarg Turbo will probably be a custom job. |

I knew someone would come up with it.
I think Redding made .20 Vartarg Turbo dies. They might make a set for the 17 caliber version, or it might be possible to find a set of .20 Vartarg Turbo bushing dies and use 17-caliber bushings. |

Awesome guys ~ kinda' what I was looking for....an excuse to do things the more complicated way! I like the sexiness of the Javelina, but I have tons of 222 brass and a smattering of 221 brass lying about....so that complicates the decision process, of course! And man, I just can't do something on the plain jane 223 case.....I feel like that's a tad too much for a 17.

17 custom
The last 17 that I had built was a 17 Remington, turn neck, zero freebore on a Rem 700 single shot, Rem sporter stock, pillar bedded, and Shilen barrel.
The rifle shot tiny groups first time to the range, using around 21.5-22.5g of H322 with 28g Berger match and 7 1/2 primers. This had to be the easiest to tune 17 that I had ever worked with, even among the several Mach 4's that I had. I of course used Remington brass, and no issues. It seems like the neck turning did away with multiple issues, not to mention the zero freebore. |
