Think I would go with the alloy pellets to avoid the leading.

600 to 800fps is difficult to couple with consistent velocity,

I would switch to a pellet rifle.

Shooting a pellet in a centerfire rifle is counterproductive. It destroys all need/justification to buy one of those fancy super accurate pellet guns.

Anything interfering with the need to buy another gun, is just wrong.

Sharp observation there Foxhunter.

Of course I was referring to obtaining a consistent velocity using gun powders versus an air rifle.

What is the range to your grackle/bird feeder?

Heck, my old .20" sheridan air pistol of long ago was better at this than probably any .172" rifle at those velocities. But that did not stop me from trying either.

I agree that here is an opportunity to buy a really nice air rifle, and it should not be passed up. DoubleD has an excellent point.

However if you just need minute of racoon sized groups at say 30 yards or less, then there is a good argument for trying to make a mouse load using pellets in a 17VRAP, though without a silencer or an long barrel you will still have a loud crack every time you pull the trigger. An air rifle can be as quiet as a mouse fart in comparison and apparently you already have appropriated some airgun pellets.

I had a bunch of "dillo diggers" tearing up a lawn a few years back and loads like this came in very handy, & at under 20 feet it was more like point and shoot rather than aim and squeeze the trigger, so precision accuracy was not necessary.

I found that 0.5grain of 700x with just about any pellet will get the job done without blowing the skirt off the pellet. Go up to 1 or 1.5gr and you are better using a 21gr piledriver or something similar that does not have a skirt.

ah the Sheridan, I remember mine very well, a real thumper of a pellet rifle and accurate to boot. I also had a Winchester .177 break open that shot .50 groups at 50 yards. shot a truck load of sparrows with it.

dillos get the v-raptor full bore, blows them open like a watermelon.

Sheridan's are great for yard vermin. One year I got 13 chipmunks that were a real pest. They moved into the same burrows are killing one, just like moving into a hotel for a week. At one time I had a pool, and they caused $1800 damage to the pool cover and its mechanism. Sighted in at 40yds and chronographed for a couple different pumps counts. Later on, I bought a CZ631 break action springer, and it worked well also, but not quite as powerful. Trigger on the CZ was like a Jewel.

I will mention it again. The primer compound makes a mess. If I didn't do this in a H&R handi I surely wouldn't use a nice rifle. It is neat to fire a puff load from a heavy rifle but in the end your better off buying an air rifle pneumatic of course. You can get 650 fps with a 15gr pellet and a rifle primer but my old Benjamin 312 does that no problem.

But I will say it is a fun neat little novelty to try.

Also my grey squirrel loads are .17 HH 25gr HP Trailboss @ 900fps. Have gotten the load down to 700-800 with no sticking out of a 21 inch barrel. More accurate and consistent. Sounds like a loud hand clap.

Be careful be safe.

I had in the past a Sheridan Blue Streak pump up and a Beeman R1 in.177. But if we are throwing up possible alternatives I'd go with a CZ LUX 22 L.R.. With a 28 inch barrel standard velocity 22's are air rifle quite. And accurate to boot.

Good point. A good target 22lr like a Win M52 or Anschutz Match is pretty quiet with SV ammo and very accurate. The downside is their weight for hunting purposes.
