Default 17 caliber bullets

I ordered a CZ 527 in 17 Remington and will be picking it up this week. I am curious as to what others are using for bullets in this cartridge. I read the thread where Hornady is discontinuing their 25 gr HP. Should I be stocking up on these? I ordered some of the 25 grain Vmax to try since I have a 1-9" twist. Any other bullets I should consider?

Try Hornady 25 grain V-Max they are still being maid albeit a bit fragile if you need a little more controlled expansion as in the case of coyote shooting.

The place I hunt does have coyotes, but I rarely see them as they be would targets of opportunity anyway. My main target are groundhogs and possibly a turkey. Does the 25 grain Vmax expand more violently than the discontinued 25 grain HP?

yes, the vmax is much more fragile than the HP.

If you get a chance to shoot a coyote with the vmax, just avoid the shoulder and you should be ok.

Does the HP act more like a "game" bullet?

The 25 Vmax is a great groundhog bullet. I would pick my shots for coyote but wouldn't be afraid of shooting one with it.

Ah you also Sherm.. I shoot hundreds of the 17 cal 20 grain and also the 20 caliber 34 grain one's in my various 20 cal's. They shoot very well, accurate and cost less that many other's. The rock chucks, squeeks, rabbits and even coyotes don't seem to know the difference, the end results is the same when they are hit.. DOA. Bill K

I googled it and they are from MidSouth? They list a B.C. of only .119 I am guessing these are short range bullets for smaller capacity cartridges, would they also do well with the 17 Remington?

Does it come down to price? I guess you guys in the west are shooting hundreds or thousands of rounds. If I have a good summer I might shoot 40 groundhogs.
