Default 17 Mink starting loads?

Can anyone please give me somewhere to start with loads for this with 20gn bullets?

Also what is the volume of the 17Velociraptor case?

Thanks

Just a wild guess but since 8.2 grs of 296 and 6 1/2 primers w/20 gr v-max are around a max load in most 17 Squirrels... I think that I'd slowly and carefully work up from there .2 or .1 grains at a time as 296 might end up being too fast of powder for the Mink...

I think that 1680/680/lilgun all might be good in the 17 Mink as well as maybe VV110 or even 120 (purley speculating right now though with out a whole lot of thought….

I PM'd you a number to call; we don't need to guess at this kind of stuff when someone else has already paved the way eh....

Man am I green with envy…. I’m real excited to hear how things go for ya because I think this will be one awesome round… I am looking forward to getting a 20 Mink going in the near future myself…

Thumbs up thanks

thats what I'm looking for. I did a bit of guessing and purchased some 2400 (almost the same burning rate as N110/lil gun) and some N120 (close to 296) so should be good to go.
Thanks for the number -much appreciated

I seated a couple of 20 cal bullets as I was necking down the Mink case and the 20mink is a sweet looking cartridge. I'm sure we are going to have a lot of fun with this little case
Cheers

Smile 17 Mink Starting Loads?

Cranky Bugga,
GL gave good advice. I called Kevin Harrington, who lives in Dover Plains, NY, today and checked to see what load data he had for the .17 Mink. Kevin has done extensive case forming, loading & shooting of the three Squirrel cartridges (17, 20 & 22) as well as the three Minks (17, 20 & 22). He said that a good starting load would be 8.4 g of 296 and the 20 g bullet. He has found by far the optimal powder for the Mink cartridges is 296. He used a Rampro action & 22 " barrel for the testing. His data log showed using 296 powder & 20g bullets gave:
8.8 g 3350 FPS
9.1 g 3420 FPS
9.2 g 3475 FPS
9.3 g 3568 FPS
9.4 g 3580 FPS
9.5 g 3601 FPS
9.6 g 3640 FPS
If may be likely that keeping velocity under 3600 FPS will extend brass life.
He reports that brass length should be 1.145 inches & OAL 1.620 inches.
If you e-mail me your e-mail address or address Kevin will send you more information. My e-mail is jdm1965@sbcglobal.net
Kevin's telephone number is 845-877-6598 and his adress is 561 Chestnut Ridge Rd., Dover Plains, NY 12522.
Good Luck!
Jim

Geez Cranky you should have given the Albury chapter of Aus varmints a call before you went and bought a pound of 2400. Ive got a near full container of it in my magazine. I could have dropped it off. I also picked up a pound of 10x from elks tonight along with the tikka in .204 SH/1 (thats what the smith stamped on the barrel) I think the H is ment to represent the first letter of his sirname and the 204 S stands for 204 short.
I will start a new thread on 20 duster loads as I think they will be close to the .204 SH/1.
Ive got a few 17cal 30gn berger ( courtesy of the WOOB )if you feel like goin heavy/ good BC.
cheers Jethro

hey Jethro,I have been out hunting this week , will be in touch soon.

The 17Mink Martini is up and running although a long way from finished. The starting loads shown above by Jim and Kevin are good to go. I haven't shot any groups yet but accuracy with the forming load easily holds minute of crow. I will post some pics soon.

Cheers
