Default 7.62 x 39 MM

Folks, I'm sure someone has used the 7.62X39 MM (Russian) case as the parent case for a project. Have any of these projects been standardized in .17 or .20 Cals?

And while I'm at it, what is the procedure for necking down a .38/.357 case to .17? Is this cartridge called the Jet?
Does anyone use it? Thanks,

7.62X39 is the parent case for 6ppc, 22 ppc, 20ppc and 17ppc all are good choice's.

Dave I'm working now with 17 and 20 PPC Imp using W-W 7.62x39 for PD shooting. I shot a 19 PPC Imp PD hunting earlier this year in Mt. A couple years ago I tried the W-W for the 17 LN. You need to remember the W-W 7.62x39 will not take the pressures that the Lapua brass will. With the capacity of the W-W case in the Imp form, I'm hoping I can keep the pressure in check yet still be able to push the heavier bullets to a repectable velocity. I like to do at least 300 cases for each caliber and the cost of Lapua would be sizable amount.

I might be nit-picking, but I thought the parent case for the PPC cases was the 220 Russian. But, on the other hand, I bet they are all on the family tree there somewhere, I just don't know in which order. I have a lot of the 7.62x39 Lapua brass and I thought it would be a good reason to try some of the other calibers based on this round. Not that one needs a good reason to try.
-Well Just did a google search and it looks like the 220 is based on the 7.62x39 assualt round. Now i've got the tree in order.

Ray, I'll have to check, I'm on the road right now and the cases have been in storage for a couple of years. I just hate hearing someone had something I could have used. I'm sure there will be other opportunities.

The Standard 7.62x39 has a large rifle primer, you can buy them special order with the small primer I just don't remember off hand who has them and at what cost.

The .357 necked down to 22 with the log shoulder is the .22 Jet, but you are killing yourself using 357 mag brass as case loss will be in the 30% or so range, unless you use the three die set for forming. I do have factory .22 Jet brass available as we still load it as a standard stock round.

Ron, you are right about the loss of capacity if it is styled after the .22 JET. I have seen a photo on this site, but can't find it right now, that shows a .17 Jet with the shoulder blown out to what looks like around 30 degrees with a short neck. Looked like it had quite a bit of capacity. Is that what you were refering to concerning the three die set?

Remington 7.62x39mm cases have small primer pockets. I'm not sure that Remington sells the component cases in bulk anymore, but I purchased what I needed on eBay.

Dave,

Not case capacity loss, but actualy case loss due to crushing and over dimples. If you start with regular .22 Jet brass and fire-form them you may loose 1-2 per 100 in the fire-forming, but using .357 Mag cases and trying to neck them down for use runs about 30 per 100 lost. The way around that is the 3 die forming set at (last I saw) around 250-300 for the set.
