17HH - BERGER 25 and CFE BLK
I am breaking in a new CZ 527 Varmint and doing load development at the same time.
I went right to the CFE BLK because it is new. I was able to nail a 20gr load right off the bat. For my gun with the NOS VGN 12.8gr of CFE BLK gives me a 5 shot ragged hole at 100. For the 25gr Berger, I started with the 11.6 gr load on the HODGDONS site. I am getting Vertical stringing with a 3/4 inch 5 shot string with all 5 touching. (almost perfectly vertical). I can up the powder based on the primers showing 0 flattening or I can play with the COL a bit. Is anybody else using the Berger or Hornady 25gr with CFE BLK. Any findings would be appreciated. v/r rch Last edited by rhouser; 10-24-2017 at 02:49 PM. |

I didn't hear from any CFE BLK 17H Hornet shooters.
On the off chance that there aren't any, I am going to consider this a chance to offer a report. I shot both the 25gr VMAX and the Berger 25gr loaded to 11.6 gr of CFE BLK. I used the FED GM 205 primers. 11.6 grains of CFE BLK is the max charge listed on the Hodgdon load site. I loaded both to 1.480 using a SP comparator on a digital Starrett caliper. I got vertical stringing from both loads. The primers as still well rounded with mild flattening. Plan- I will first up the powder by .1 grain and reshoot. I will bring my MS chrony and see what the velocities are doing. If up doesn't help or velocities look out of line, I will start down at .1 grain. By all reports the Bergers should be fine shooters, I just need to find what my 527 Varmint likes. Thanks to all that make this a great site. v/r rch Last edited by rhouser; 10-26-2017 at 12:28 PM. |

If you have a 10 thousandth caliper, measure a few of each bullet and see if the Nosler are smaller. Could be you have a tight bore, I always seem to find Nosler running small for caliber. Did you seat for the same jump for all the bullets?

I have a working load for my CZ-527 V with CFE BLK and Berger 25gr bullet.
I load 11.7 gr of CFE-BLK, Hornady Brass, FED 205M primer, 25gr Berger FB Varmint. Seated to OAL 1.479 using Hornady .17 cal comparator bushing (about 1.724" on caliper). 10 shot .475" (edge to edge, no adjustment for the caliber) ragged hole group @ 100 yards indoor (no wind). Because of the missing center I cannot judge how many clovers or one hole shots there were. I ended up just aiming at the hole because my target dot was gone. Chrony Stats: MIN: 3241, MAX: 3273, AVG: 3261, SD: 13, ES: 32 No pressure signs. Flattening of primers was equivalent to the Factory 25 gr Hornady HP's that I used for a base line. I am very happy with this. I need to load this again and shoot a few 3 - 5 shot groups just to see how fine it might pull. v/r rch Last edited by rhouser; 10-29-2017 at 06:39 PM. |

I shoot hornardy hollow points, with
11.2g of blackout gives me 3187 fps in a 20" CZ Varmint, win primers and hornardy brass, 25 hp. 11.5 gr blackout with 20-vmax is 3700, The Bergers are quite a bit more expensive, for me to source, Great speed with blackout, picked up 250-300 over N120, and 4198 |
