What vol. can I get from a 16.5 in. barrel. Thinking about putting one on my LVSF. Thanks for some input. Catman, sorry 20,25. gr. bullets.

I'd guess 3400 fps with a 25 Hornady hp. I'd stick with faster powders. N133, H322, 4198, etc.

17 fireball
I would say around 3400-3500 would be a good average. In a few weeks maybe I can tell you, for sure, as I am working one up now, but it will have a 23 inch barrel, to run through the chrony. Bill K

Fireball
Hey guys,
Haven’t been on the site for a while, so thought I’d comment. My Fireball started out with a 24” barrel. It was awesome on Coyotes and Pdogs with the 25g Vmax. Had it cut down to 18” so I could run a suppressor. I don’t know the actual speed, but I could tell no difference in field performance with the short barrel. Same accuracy with both the Vmax and 30 Golds. Yotes and Pdogs really hate it! |

Catman: Have my 17 Fire Ball up and running now and over the late summer and in the pivots on the small ground squirrels it did a number on them.
I am using a 24 inch barrel and shooting the 20 grain bullets. My average FPS with a top load of CFE Blk is 4029 and with a top load of AA2200 is is 4103. Have not shot many of the 25 grn bullets. ( I have a chart worked up for both and dial my shots in and I can tell you, out to 400 and a little beyond, they do take out the critters. ground squirrels and Rock chucks) But if you take what most say and you loose around 30-50 fps on barrel length, I would say your 20 inch will get around the 3850 mark, plus or minus. Only way you are going to be sure is run some loads through your barrel and check them with a chrony. Bill K ( NOTE ) One shooting buddy of mine is also running a 17fb and it getting around the same fps in his and I believe it has a 24 inch barrel also. He moved to Coloarao and may see this post of yours, even if it is a old one and add to it. |
