Good write-up, Austin.

I took my 18.5" HB model up to the Panhandle awhile back and killed a few pd's with it using 20 grain ammo. I left my 24" model rifle at home. Inside of 200 yards its pretty much a point blank killer. It was windy and not the best of days weather-wise with limited shooting while I was there, but I like the cartridge for closer-in targets of opportunity. Its definitely going back again when it gets a bit warmer.

I bought some of the 15.5 grain ammo when it was on sale but I haven't tried any of it yet.

On a different subject, has anyone seen these? Custer probably needed a few of these at the Little Big Horn in 1876......

Good report........... Thanks.

A few of those might have helped Custer hold out a little longer, but his major mistake was leaving the Gatling gun or two behind, by being to over confident. Bill K

Nicely done!! I just can’t say it enough, and many would not believe me and many couldn’t believe their eyes seeing me consistently pop PDs at 300 with a 17 gr vmax out of the CF version of the 17 WSM (CCM). It’s one of the best sized cartridges for lower noise and more shooting before needing to move to another location where the larger boomers would take em down into their holes sooner.

Although I enjoy the77/rugers more than anything including my CZs I still can’t stop thinking about an auto loader in this round. That said my love hate relationship with an early model bmag is right up their with my 77/s. It’s a confidence factor knowing what you pull the trigger on is going to get hit right where you are aiming. Love the accuracy but boy do I dislike that darn cock on close bolt. Amazing what a guy will live with when the accuracy is there lol.

For me that lil 17 wsm was the ONLY reason I could let go of my cooper with all three of the CCM based cartridges. Hoping I can somehow resist helping someone here with their home purchase lol 17 or 22 those CCMs are awesome!

Like many of you, I bought a few cases of this 15gr stuff when Midway had their big sale on it.

I have a few cases of the 15.5gr 17 Hornet ammo I'd like to try on some rats too.

Not my first time. I shot many late last season (several hundred) and directly compared them to the AE 20gr, on the same day, at the same rats. The 15gr is MORE explosive for sure. The difference is quite evident out to 150 yds anyway.

I kinda thought you'd already shot rats with the 15gr ammo but wasn't sure which is why I asked. Seems POI for the 15 and 20 grainers out of these 17 WSM's is real close to the same, which makes things nice.

One of my all time favorite videos to watch is over on Eric Mayer's site where he was shooting ground squirrels with the 15gr ammo and one of them he connected on, it literally looks as if the little bugger swallowed a grenade. It's awesome!

Very interesting. Years ago I was shooting the 15.5 gr NTX from my 17ah which was very very close to the same poi as my 20 gr vmax load. I thought the difference between the two (@the velocity I was shooting them at) was so negligible at 150 yards (plenty of live targets at that spot) that I got bored with that failed experiment and stopped shooting them.

But on the lower velocity of the WSM may be where it’s at. In the 17 CCM (similar velocity as the WSM) I only did a few shots at home and wasn’t impressed and stayed with the 17/17s. Maybe I should have tried the 15.5s on a live target...

Those 15.5 NTX's in the 17 caliber cartridges, we work with are very nice.. I don't feel bad at all having to use them, in my Commie State, now as they shoot as accurate and even more so than the 17 grain lead one's do/did. You will be pleasantly surprised on how well they take out our critters, from some of the small one's up to the larger ones. Bill K

These are 15.ogr not 15.5.....a different projectile altogether

I’ll be darned, do you know who makes the bullets? I just assumed Hornady did and they dropped the .5 basically using the same bullet (thinking more explosive) but I imagine for the wsm, they had to make a new one designed for the higher velocity. Nice to design a bullet just got the wsm but I still would have thought it’d be one of the first bullets out and the 25s I could not remotely be interested in, heck I’ve never shot them in any of the the 17 AH and now the 17 HH.

Tomorrow I’ll pull one from one to see how they compare to the 15.5 NTX.

That said, it’s really hard to beat the lil 17 gr pill or round ball. The longer 15.5 didn’t seem to offer much in the area of wind-drift and or explosiveness.

One can never have too many options...
