Sako re-barreling
As I know you're all so good as mentors here, let me pose a question.
I bought a Sako A2 Varmint in .308 a few weeks ago, intending to take its 2 stage match trigger and bottom metal off, exchange them with the standard trigger and bottom metal on my 20-250 A2 and sell the 308 on. But as the action is absolutely as new, and it has a pleasant piece of wood, I don't know if I can bring myself to part with it. The rifling is crisp and the throat looks great, but the barrel has a few pits. I have no use for a 308 and already have two 17 Rem Sakos, 243 Sako A2 and a 243 Tikka 595, my Sako A2 20-250, a Tikka 695 stainless 25-06, Sako L61 7x57 and a Sako 75 varmint in .222. I'm sort of leaning towards telling myself that the only gap in my collection is for a 22 centrefire that's a bit more powerful than a 222. So, what could I have built on the A2 action which would feed from its magazine well? I know 22-250 would feed, but I'm not particularly interested in the 22-250 and would prefer something which burns a bit less powder. |

I don't know about feeding, but maybe 22 BR would work for your needs.

Mine's a 6BR, but it doesn't feed. Perhaps it could be made to feed but I use it single shot and haven't fooled with it. The 6BR is an awfully nice cartridge....it shoots 55's with extreme accuracy faster than a 22-250 shoots 55's, and with less powder.

I have a like new Sako -75 in .308 as well a SS Hunter model I intend to have rebarreled. I was considering a 6 BR, to shoot 55-70 grain bullets. the factory 6PPC magazine's are available for about $119.00 and they will feed a 6 BR, there is no reason why a 22 BR would not feed from the mag either.

308 conversion?
Thats an excellent rifle /action that you to work with.
I don't know if having a repeater is important to you which might either limit or end your choices. Thats a staggered feed which is more fussy then a stack style in a Tika. Choose a calibre based on quality Lapua brass You could build a repeater 260Ackley...neck up or down Lapua brass If you choose to build a single shot then you have more choices 20BR, 20DASHER, 6mmBR , or 6mmBR DASHER There isnt such a thing as a bad choice !
