Default 20-224 Weatherby Mag?

G'day All,
I have been searching for some time(with little luck) for an old Sako 579 to turn into a 20-250. I have just been offered a Jap Weatherby Mark V Varmintmaster in 224 Weatherby Mag. My gunsmith has a 20-224 WM reamer and plenty of brass.I have a 20 cal 1:9 Lilja barrel and plenty of 50g Bergers. Should I seriously consider going down the Weatherby track?
Cheers Dugald

Default Whoa, Whoa!

Why would you turn a rifle that is potentialy worth 1000.00 plus into a 700.00 wildcat? You can pick up donor Sako 579's in the 6-700 range all day on Gunbroker and even make some money on the take off parts. Taking a rare and valuable 224mag Weatherby Varmintmaster and doing the conversion is ......just makes me hurt to think about it, unless it's beat to heck and shot out.

Dugald, Has a different situation being in Australia. I would think you would have the capacity to handle the 50s and good barrel and case life with a little restraint. If I remmember correctly Kevin Weaver did a 20 on the Weatherby case for Bill West. Kenny

Thanks Kenny,
getting used Sakos from the States to Aus is a trifle difficult and the Weatherby is not worth much here! Any chance of a PM with contact details for Bill West? Cheers Dugald

I'm disappointed with the velocities I've achieved from my 26" barreled 20-250 Sako AII so far. What are you hoping to achieve?

G'day English Marv,
I run 40g V Max's at 3750 out of my 20 Practical and would like to run the Berger 50g at around the same out of something larger. What sort of results are you getting with your 20-250?
Cheers Dugald

So far, I'm safely up to around 3700 fps. I'm struggling for time, but am trying slower powders and tougher brass than the WW I was advised to use. To be honest, I think 3750 fps will be the safe max for me. I've enjoyed the ride, but wish I'd gone with the 20 tac.
