Default 17REM w/ZERO freebore shooting factory ammo

I have about four boxes of 17 REM 25gr. factory ammo. Would it hurt to shoot out of my custom built rifle with zero freebore for the brass or should I just sell it.

Chamber:
-Neck- .196
-OAL- 2.218 JAMMED IN THE LANDS 27gr gold
Greg, told me he took the dummy round I sent him and re-seated the bullet by closing the bolt because he said I was better off with zero free bore, so how much of the bullet is acually in the rifling when you do that.

Factory ammo:
-NECK- .192 TO .194
-OAL- 2.115

The neck shouldn't be an issue, but with factory ammo I would be off the lands a lot.

I'm assuming zero freebore doesn't matter being that far of the lands?

Back when I was building 17 Rem AR-15's, I tried both 1:10 and 1:12 twist Pac Nor barrels. With factory 25gr Remington ammo, the 1:12 twist barrels outshot the 1:10's every time. However, there weren't many bullets that would stabalize at 1:12. Even the 20gr V-Max wouldn't.

The factory 25gr bullets are seated really deep, I bet they will be fine. However, my 9 twist barrel will turn most to dust, so don't be surprised if you shoot a bunch that never make it to the paper. Larry

Default Hey Larry......

I'm curious.

What make/brand is your 9" twist barrel. I ask because the Rem 700 17Rem. has had a 9" twist barrel for many years now.

Your's is the only 9" twist, that I've heard of, that's blowing up bullets. At 4000fps, that's only 321,600 rpm.........pretty much a normal rpm.

Me thinks something else is happening, to cause your "puffs".

Just trying to help.....

Kevin
